OC3D Article: Video games get a bumper year for sales...but did we get best value?

Halo 3 was to short, Assassins Creed was to repetitive.. Only game I have really enjoyed this year is COD4.. And Guitar Hero 3 :p

Graphics are average and gameplay was more of the same. Multiplayer is good, but then again: it's more of the same from Halo 2, nothing innovative or new.

That was my point in the article :)

I agree that Halo 3 was over hyped.

Only games that have wowed me this year are Call of Duty 4 and Portal.

Bioshock had to be one of, if not the highlight of 2007 on the 360, slaps Halo3 down easily.

I like Assassin's creed a lot, but it could have been a lot better, the formula was too repetitive to hold interest after the first or second main assassination

That and the fact you had to spend almost the entire game getting to the assassinations

True, imagine if you had to do every single investigation to get the contract on your main hit? I think that would have sunk the game completely.

One thing I could never figure out if I liked was the sci-fi element, I'm not sure if its adds or detracts from the game as a whole

Ye I think it was a nice idea and a decent enough explanation of why you never really died in the game. It did seem a little added on to me, but I see what they were trying to do. It's a shame but the game just felt a little rushed

Games & Atmosphere

is anyone here old enough to remember Realms of the Haunting or Alone in the Dark?

I loaded RotH under Dos-Box under XP and it still, despite crappy graphics and lousy controls, make the hair on the back of my head stand up.

Bioshock also had atmosphere

Most don't - which is why they are not so good. Doom3 was a good example of no atmosphere - they just teleported monsters into places you had just looked and then used lighting effects to make it a surprise - that was just annoying!!!

Agreed. I love games that slowly build up tensions and then make me jump out of my skin. Resident Evil 1 and System Shock are among my faves.

haha, Alone in the Dark, I was just talking about that game the other day. Yea, I was 6 or something when my uncle used to play, but I remember some creepy bird thing popping in the window or something, scared me every time.

i think fear really brought out the shock factor to me, that really gets you when you're not expecting it. but coming from monolith i wasn't expecting anything else :) they did AVP and AVP2 (2 of my all time favourite games) the engine they produced is still strong, condemned was fantastic also... i hope a new avp game comes out soon i'm dying for one
