New GFX Card

Hello everyone,

first and probably last post here tbh...

i was looking for some advice on a new graphics card.

Currently running Gainward 6800GT Goes Like Hell 512 Edition. but it is overheating something awful. running CS:S last night GPU reached 89 degrees C. Not Cool (literally)

Anyway, i've had that card now for 2 years so i think its time to buy a new one.

Unfortunatly my budget will only stretch to 80 pounds... which really isnt so much of a problem as all i really want it to be able to do is play CS:S at very high spec without crashing/overheating.

So I am here seeking your wisdom... please could you recommend a card at the above price that will run CS:S and is PCI-E.

Any post are much appreciated.

Thanks

Ally

This would be a good place to start. Also this

For example I loaded up these cards in the vga-charts, with Doom3 Timedemo1 (1280x1024x32, 4x AA, 8x AF, Ultra Quality) and I get:

--current--

6800 GT 42.60fps

--~£80--

X1650 XT 42.70fps

7600 GT 44.50fps

--~£140--

X1950 Pro 67.80fps

7900 GS 67.00fps

--~£150--

X1950 XT 90.70fps

--~£200--

8800 GTS 106.70fps

Now Doom3 is not CS:S but it seems to me that you will get very little gain spending only £80. The prices above have all come down a little since the article, for example I got an XFX 8800 GTS (overclocked) for ~£180.

Do you think you could strech towards an 8600? A very good performing card for the money. ;)

It will do you good, and CS:S will be a dodel to run with it. :D

I'd like to see a whole listing like that. Some webpage that constantly updates.

Tomshardware do update their list/page but it's not 'constantly' being updated. They don't have the 8600 on there for example.

It's not a bad reference if you want to compare 1 card to another but you cannot take the fps values as absolutes because some of that depends on the rest of the system.

Yeah that§s the closest I§ve come to it.

It§d probably take some1 to have 1 rig to oneside and put a line of cards into it.

Don§t know if it§d be enough in their interests tho.. perhaps a shop might.
