Hey guys

Put it this way, I've had a good experience using torrents and now I feel its time to quit while ahead/before we become controlled in everyway.

So I'm basically asking where is the cheapest place to purchase CDs, Games and the like.

I mean, digital downloads sound ok in theory, yet what happens if their server crashes/buggers up - Or if I want to rerip in a different format/bitrate. Just seems better to have a CD.

As for games, I usually only check play.com but I am aware Steam are usually pretty good - have been using them for ages yet again, what if my password was highjacked etc.

Also, now being a student, what software is available for free/cheaper to me? I know about that office enterprise one, also eset antivirus is half price.

I get all my music that's CD format from Amazon, Play.com or blahdvd.com, not as well known as the other two but I've had nothing but fantastic service from them for about 5 years, they operate out of Jersey & offer pretty speedy free postage on most stuff.

If you're looking for genre-specific music, this place is sick for DnB/Dubstep/Hip-Hop/House etc etc so have a look http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/home

It can be more expensive but you won't find a lot of the stuff in stock elsewhere. They also list the BPM which is handy if you are into your mixing.

I know you said you wanted to move away from digital downloads, and I agree that in many cases it's nice to have the real thing, but these two websites are something I stumbled upon the other day. I haven't bought anything from them as I'm trying to save for some new speakers & an amp, but bear in mind you have to top-up your account so make sure there's enough on there you want to buy.

Music: http://mp3panda.com/

Films/TV Shows: http://movieberry.com/

As far as I know, both those websites operate out of Russia, and due to a completely legal loophole they can list the stuff at ludicrous prices. Try $0.50 for a full album or pay $0.05/track. If they had more niche genres on there I'd be all over it tbh.

Hope that helps! :)

I tend to abuse the HMV sales, mainly the two for £10 deals because they tend to come round pretty much all my preferred music every so often. I've bought most of Maiden and Metallica through those deals.

The thing I like about Amazon is that it downloads songs to whatever folder you want using it's own downloader, then it adds them into your iTunes or WMP list automatically

Ditto.

I also took advantage of the Zavvi sales. when they had some CD's on buy one get one free and some of them down to £3 anyway!

OMFG!!! how dare you abandon torrenting....

Mind you, I did have to buy a shpongle song the other day cos i couldnt find a decent quality version of it....

Dont buy things...download things!

Mind you, i reckon if some people got caught then maybe i would be scared into submission, or id hide in a tiny cupboard under my stairs secretly downloading XD

Meh, pirating will always be around, people are struggling to have money to have a good living why waste it on material you don't.

I'll always have my little download sessions for things I do not generally need. When I can just go to YouTube and listen to it anyway I don't see the point of them moaning, for every music video you get millions of hits. When they charge 60pence for each track think of the money they're losing :).

Don't make the music if you don't want downloaders lol.

Saying that I will always support good software and donate as much as possible for software which is useful and has helped me.

But if you are potentially going into a computing job - even a high end one perhaps for government etc. you dont want it on your "profile"

could an admin delete this thread please? iv got all the help i was after :)

youth of today hey.

I have never been able to chose a side when it comes to pirating. For lots of factors.

I buy things which I feel really deserve it. Sounds harsh I know. But the amount of games I have played which if I would have bought them I would be serverly despressed.

It would also help if things wern't so overpriced (such as operating systems although luckily for me I get them from my Dads buisness).

I also believe it is the music/film industries own fault for getting into the current situation. You could say they are a woolworths. Just couldn't keep up with the change in tech. Which if you run a buisness you would know that is a fatal error.

Why not do a bit of both. Maybe in the future all media will be free from the internet. But you will pay an extra £1 towards your internet bill which then goes to the media developers. PROBLEM SOLVED. :)

i can agree with the disappointing games bit - there have been some instances where if i had of bought I would literally have written the company an email telling them of their failure

Windows 7 @ £60 is about the right price I believe especially with ubuntu advancing at a great pace (ext4 rocks)

but some games and music are just worth the money just the pricing really

Just opinions, not a youth any more really tbh lol.

Why waste your money on something you can get for free, I pay for the stuff I use and helps me of course.

For instance I just had to fork out £1200 on a damn license for my website, ridiculous for a piece of PHP software.

Before hand I downloaded the software but it was what I needed so I purchase the license.

Meh they have enough money so why moan for them?

Right I think we've had enough of this thread now actually. I let it go for a while but I do not think not paying for intellectual property is something we want discussed on OC3D.

Soz guys but this thread is sealed :)
