Fractal - Project CJ

Wraith

Bettyswollocks
Hello gents and gentle ladies of OC3D, I bring to you today my build log for the Fractal Modding Competition Project "CJ"..

At4j2Ib.jpg

Now for those of you who have a keen interest in aeronautics and have given the renders a look over will probably have put 2 and 2 together and figured out why it's called "CJ" but for those that don't here's a tiny insight into why. Sit back and relax because here comes a little history lesson ;)

In the early 1960s a company called Lockheed developed an aircraft as a "Black Project" (inspiration right there) by tasking their Skunk Works division to create a long range strategic reconnaissance aircraft, this was named the Lockheed A-12 which was further developed in 1964 to what many now recognise as the iconic Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird", fast forward 10 years and Lockheed started development of yet another very iconic aircraft the F-117 "Nighthawk" which took its maiden flight the very year I was born 1981. These 2 aircraft adorned my walls and ceiling as a child, so the image of them will forever inspire my creativity, what does this have to do with "CJ"? Well the man behind these avionic masterpieces was Lockheed designer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson, so using his sleek styling and uniform colours of both these planes, my build log has direction and form and his initials shall be the project name as a mark of respect.

The plan, the main starting point of this build will be to create an angular stealthy interior and exterior by utilising a light weight timber frame wrapped in a thick black fabric to create easy removable panels consisting of PSU cover, back panel, front fan housing and finally a solid angular under lit roof panel. All these panels will be finished in a satin black to match the case exterior colour, the GPUs chosen for this build are now the KFA2 GTX950 EXOC this is where the fun begins as I shall be dismantling the cards and giving them a stealth satin black finish on the shrouds and PCI brackets to match the case, also to add a little contrast to the interior by breaking up the all black theme created so far I will be painting the back plates a dark gunmetal grey this gunmetal theme will also be carried over to the Corsair Dominator heat spreaders and SLI bridge too, to finish off the interior and continuing the Black, Red & Grey theme I shall be going with a set of braided PSU cables to give the interior of the build its finishing touch.

The Exterior will be given some love too with lighting top and bottom, white led lighting strips will be used to create a subtle under glow effect beneath the new top panel which will also be raised up on six 13mm risers to allow for escaping air to flow and the same lighting will further continue along the bottom of the case too.

Now before I start tearing things apart and get to modding I'd like to take a moment to give extended thanks to TinyTomLogan, Fractal and most of all, all you guys of the OC3D community who without, none of this would be possible and I look forward to reading your comments throughout this thread as the log progresses.

Take a look at some of the other entries in the Define S Modding Series including TTLs own take on the Define S. http://www.fractal-design.com/home/definesmodding

FLIP YEAH.... AGAIN! It's getting exciting. All fractal builds have started deploying!

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

of all the build that we are doing, i like this one the most. such clean. much tidy. wow!
Very kind of you to say so, it will look sleek and tidy when finished.. the bit I'm most looking forward to is getting caked in sawdust, glue and filler, it's going to be a messy journey from here on in. But I love the reality that I'll be making it come to life and moulding it with my bare hands, I could very well just measure up the panels get them machined and just fit them "job done", but there is nothing personal in that and the idea I find very synthetic.

Hey Wraith; what 3D rendering program did you use to come up with the model. I'm just curious as I need to find one for my new build and the only option at the moment is SolidWorks Rendering but its a bit expensive and complicated so I need a cheaper more simpler one.

All done in Blender fella.

Well I think it's about time we have our first little update.. so the delivery gods are smiling today along with a Royal Mail ninja who got away like the wind.

So here we have some hardware for you to peruse.

The motherboard, an Asus Z97 Deluxe for all that SLI and Overclocking goodness and once stripped of its goldie gordiness looks just devilishly stealthy, some of you guys may recognise this little beasty from another build log on these here forums..... no? it's the very same board that was the base for TTLs WD40 server build, that's right Tom very generously gave me the board for this project, I think you'll agree it suits the theme extremely well.

And for our feature presentation I give you the KFA2 GTX 950, you may have seen TTLs recent review of these little mid range Maxwell beasties and if you haven't I suggest you take a look >HERE<. Now rather than just the one we have found a breeding pair for the task at hand, I know there will be a select few scratching their heads right now saying why not just get a GTX 970 and be done with it, well I will say this with the EXOC clocks these little (large) beauts will be around 5 - 8% faster than a single GTX 970, and honestly 2 cards look the nutts! especially once they have received a new lick of paint, satin black for the fan side of things and a deep gunmetal grey for the back plates which should see these cards blend nicely into the build theme.

If anyone is interested in the KFA2 lineup of cards or the GTX 950 OC, you can get them direct from Overclockers.co.uk

Until next time my forum going brethren - Wraith.

Just a quick look at the hardware in the case and a dry fit for me to get the measurements and clearances needed for making the internal panels and lining up the cable routes. This is possibly the slowest part of the build not including waiting for paint to dry, I'll start laying paint early next week and between paint coats I'll be working on the panels, for now I have to draw up and cut dummy panels from card to be 100% that my dimensions and measurements are accurate to provide a snug fit.

Measure, measure again. Fit a dummy panel ..... Then realise you missed something glaringly obvious lol .... Rinse and repeat!

Or maybe that's just me

Just a brief update and a name drop :) Mr Kambo the forum legend, very kindly loaned me a spare set of Dominator Platinum top bars while I paint mine, so huge props to him he's a true legend. Not many know this but my rig is very rarely switched off as it's used for work and play and runs constantly for 5 days of the week, so this build is a tiny juggling act  all fun and games but modding is a must and progress must be made.

Todays task at hand was to disassemble the GPUs, RAM and the PCI blanking plates to give them a coat of primer ready for some colour coats tomorrow.

I quite like the quirky GPU arrangement. Not sure I am going to like them in black but I could probably be persuaded :)

I used to love it when you could bag a pair of cheap mid range cards and slap them together to beat the big boy. Sadly AMD and Nvidia have wised up to it and are now mean with the VRAM :(

What resolution shall you be running them at dude?

Aye the RAM thing is a little frustrating, but DX12 should see better use of SLI'd RAM in the not to distant future. The thing is I don't game any higher than 1080p so 2GB is more than plenty, but the main reason for dual GTX 950s is the rendering output so it's paired RoPs and Texture processes that I'm after along with new gen Maxwell Cudas. Once I have myself a 4770K or 4790K I'll not be looking at any hardware for a good few years.

Here we are again with another update, PSU arrived today :) The Fractal Edison 650W 80+ Gold and it's lovely and meaty heavy! a sign of great quality in my eyes.

And further progress on the colour coats for the GPUs, RAM & PCI blanking plates, after just 3 coats the gunmetal started to show its true "colour" and it's stunning! The Satin black was a little trickier to lay on the GPU shrouds as it looks white in certain light as it goes on glossy (wet) so you have to be careful as it's easy to apply too much at once, 3 light coats later and we have good coverage just to be sure and 100% satisfied I've applied a 4th coat all over, now I play the waiting game until tomorrow for the re assembly and fitting into the case.. the truth is in the build, fingers crossed and pray to the modding gods that everything matches perfectly.
