Fractal - Project CJ

Looking really good. Can't wait to see the stealth fabric installed. It inspired me to waste a good 20 minutes of work looking at SR-71 pictures.

She's a gorgeous bird, bit of a leaky beast on the tarmac but good god could she move, did you know her wingpan shortened and her overall length grew by 2 meters during full mach flight :o.

On topic, I have started the fabric already as this glue takes a while to set on fabric, I might have it all installed in a few hours, could be tomorrow though we'll see how well it goes.

EDIT:

So panels are now covered :) they require some fine tuning and the back panel also requires a covering of material but you'll see what I mean in the images.

Firstly cut material to panel size leaving a margin all the way around, Secondly apply copious amounts of Copydex to both surfaces and alow to go tacky (20 minutes or so) then squeeze each surface together.

After alowing to dry for 30 minutes, then comes the fun bit! Timming out the centers of the fan holes and as I've come to learn with using this fabric and the MDF hardboard when you use a hot glue gun they bond instantly and no amount of pulling separates them (winner winner chicken dinner).

Now with all the panels covered and wiped down free of marks and dust, they were giggled into place very tightly I might add, and the disappointed photos began, for what ever reason the white LEDs make the "Black" look very graphite Grey, I may have to play with some other colours and see what works best, but rest assured they are most definitely Black.

Very true it's why I decided to go this route rather than the same old same old acrylic or sheet alloy methods, I was kind of inspired by the way old speaker cabinets, furniture upholstery is done and how simple it is. The main issue with this in a PC case is material choice, I initially wanted to use a wood frame made from 12 x 12mm timber and wrap that in the fabric but my trial runs went terribly wrong and the frame was simply too weak so the moment you put any tention across the fabric it twitsed the frame, so sheet materials had to be used, plywood was too thick and heavy, foam board was too light and flexible.. which brought me to fibre board which as it turns out is epic for such tasks.

Update time!

So I decided today that the back panel was needed and knocked that out in a few minutes, it was a simple piece of the internal panels and needed to finally clean the look up, you can't tell from a distance but the material has a bloody great pencil line right down the middle of it! I didn't notice this until I had finished it and cleaned off the dust and finger prints... Doh! I either need to find out how to get pencil off neoprene or redo the panel altogether.

Anyway with that out of the way I moved on to the panel I've been dreading, the roof panel, I attacked this with the same gusto a fat bird eats cake and that was my mistake right off the bat, forgetting that my jigsaw has quite the pendulum action after the first cut it looked like a dogs hind leg and was going to require some real elbow grease :( but it had to be done. Once I had roughly the "right" angled segments removed with the jigsaw I savaged it with the surform block to get it almost accurate not forgetting I have a 2mm of room to play with, then further taking it back with a medium rasp until I hit my original marks. I knew that using MFC was never going to give me a 100% tidy finish but I had already planned for this and out came the wood filler and it has recieved a substantial covering which tomorrow will be lightly sanded back and into the (hopefully) final shape which can then be wrapped in the same fabric the internals have. Once the panel is complete it will be ready for 6 aluminium standoffs which will raise it 13mm above the case top alowing for subtle LED strips to be wired and fitted to the underside.

Sooo mini update.

I've finished and covered the new roof panel all it needs now are the 6 brushed aluminium standoffs which I've had to reorder as the ones I originally ordered are far too tall, so one or two days before I can fit it to the case and get the overall final look which you guys will have to wait for :).

Much speading of glue, annoyingly unset Copydex stinks of used nappy

After drying time for a wet wipe down and steam with the iron, sadly this is the only way to clean this material but it looks soooo good once dry (which doesn't take long).

This material is very strange to photograph, it always looks a very off Black almost dark grey but I can assure you it is a very very deep Black.

Next on the list of things to do are the aluminium stand offs, cut, solder and sleave the LED strips, install the new cable extentions when they arrive Thursday/Friday and complete the SLI bridge.

EDIT: Just to give you guys a an idea of just how Black this material is. ;)
