For those whose college/uni is blocking them from OC3D

It's a Level 3 BTEC on IT. I'd much rather do AS and A-Levels, but I have a medical issue which means the work load would be too much for me. You can only do a minimum of three AS Levels, and it's just not feasible

So yeah, BTEC it is. I'm hoping that the prejudices I've had against BTECs for the last couple of years are unfounded, but it's the only option I really had.

Ah, right. Sorry to hear about your medical issue. A BTEC is still a very respectable qualification. Otherwise, Uni's wouldn't allow students with BTECs to enroll.

I'm actually putting some serious consideration into a Computer Science course, but i'll have to wait to see how I do at this stuff.

Computer Science consists of a lot of programming and web development. So, if you're into that sort of thing, it would be a good course to go for.

At the end of this year, I get to choose one of three 'pathways' for next year's curriculum.
1) Business related IT stuff (not really interested in that, so haven't looked into it at all)
2) Networking
3) Programming

The two latter options both interest me, but I think programming's in the lead.

I did A-Levels at college, but it involved absolutely no programming. Do you know what programming language(s) you will be taught?

I'm afraid not. It's so early in my course, that we're just learning about the three coding paradigms and when to use what, etc.
The few bits of code that we've done has just been copied off the board - the 'program' we created worked, but none of us have any idea WHY it worked. I'm hoping things shall progress

Yeah I know exactly what you mean. It's good you're getting a start at college as it'll better prepare you for programming at Uni, if you decide to pursue Computer Science or a related course.

Yeah, should help. Did you find it hard being plunged into the deep-end at Uni? Like, were you expected to know something about coding already, or did they expect to have to teach everyone from scratch?

I wasn't thrown into the deep end right away. They expected everyone to have little or no previous programming experience, so they started from the basics. I believe it would be the same for most universities as many colleges do not have a programming aspect in their curriculum.
