External HDD Eject Trouble

I've got a WD My Passport 2TB (USB powered) and I have most of my programs/media/files on it. Whenever I try to eject it safely, I get the message that it's still in use. I'm assuming that it says that because it's accessing the thumbnails of the programs that are pinned to my start bar or something. But no worries; to eject it, I've always just logged off, pulled it out, and logged back in again. What I want to know is if it's actually safe to do that and if it is, can I just close Windows Explorer with task manager and restart it?
 
It's perfectly safe to do that yes...
What programs do you have installed to it? And Can I ask why you have programs installed on an external drive? That'll be the reason why you're having the problem
 
Well I plan to get a SSD really soon when I build my rig and I just want to have as many programs installed on the external so I can put my games on the SSD (I can only afford a 128gB). I've got all my word processors, image editing, media software, game emulators, burning roms, malwarebytes, and a few other little programs like speedfan, etc. Can't remember the rest
 
Well it's never recommended to install programs to an external drive...

You'd be better off taking the drive out of the external caddy and using it internally if you want it for programs
 
if i take it out the caddy of the my passport, can i put it back in or is it going to have to stay internal because i see no physical way to open it without breaking it :/
 
it says sata on it...
It's a usb interface though - and that's part of the PCB so it isnt even a sata drive behind the usb interface.
Easy to take apart btw - the cover of it just pulls apart and frees up the inside. All the electronics are attached to the drive - the caddy is just a plastic cover
 
depends what you mean by that ;)

I have mine sat in the bottom of my optical bays on Velcro, with the usb cable going through the external watercooling grommets and into the usb in the back. The cable goes straight behind the motherboard tray so you cant see a thing.

I personally have enough space on my 128gb M4 and my 320gb passport just holds music and some films - never needed to install programs to it...

But to answer your question - no :)
Although my mate has a USB3 one which he was getting 110mbps transfer rates on copying stuff across - which is incredibly fast for an external drive

Errr bytes I think?
Whichever windows transfer defaults as.

When I say copying stuff across - I mean from the external drive to an SSD
