Encoding Software

I am wanting to encode an .avi file at 2.4gb to fit on a dvd of 4.7gb on dvd format but not loose any quality.

Is this possible ?

If so please reccomend me some software that will do the job

cant remember what the software is called, tmpeg or something but when i was doing dvd's it was the best.

Adobe Encore does that if i remember right.

But is very expensive and i know of no other way of getting it other than buying it of corse

I don't know if this will do the job you want, but you can look up Virtual Dub, which is free. You can stick a bunch of filters in there too (like ffdshow filters for example) so it might not be the easiest software to use, but you get a lot of functionality for your money.

There's also mediacoder which does a good job to turn one format into another. Also free.

I think winavi does that sort of thing, if I remember it correctly it was pretty good so you should look into it
