Elite: Dangerous - Have we found the next Crysis?

Hey guys, Are you on for the evening? I will make a concerted effort to be on if so?

Add me on steam and we'll get something going.

I can't dogfight at all. Really don't know why

well its not setup right then haha :P, i need to have a good look at keybinding on the hotas i think

You need maybe two keys on your keyboard. I'd show my binds but I don't know if I still have them. I'll check when i get home.

Only thing i do not like about the Hotas system is it does not have another axis for vertical flight so i have to resort to keys

Really? I use thumb buttons and a trigger finger multi-axis button on mine for vertical thrusters, i literally never have to touch the keyboard, ever :P

Well on mine besides up and down with the stick its either use the axis on the thruster or the z axis on the stick. Though my get around was to remove some bindings off and move the vertical axis onto the thruster. Just means i have to now use the keyboard still.

Ok so I got held up by mule uncle making me taste 8 different quite expensive whisky's, but I shall be on in a little while

Contrary to what many believe, you don't need a flightstick to be awesome at Elite: Dangerous. It's been like 20 years since I owned a flightstick, and being a huge Elite fan I just couldn't see the need for a flightstick. Granted it can give players an edge, however playing with mouse and keyboard can be just as effective. It's all about the right hotkey and mouse adjustments fitting your playstyle.

I was having problems in the beginning of Premium Beta with the controls. Somehow I decided that using a Xbox 360 controller would be the best option. Boy was I wrong.. Now perhaps you're an ace with a gamepad and shooter games, but I sure ain't! I couldn't hit a damn thing, even if it was right in front of me... I decided to take a hard look at the keyboard and mouse setup after that failure.

By setting the x-axis on mouse to YAW, and y-axis on mouse to PITCH, then putting a YAW ROLL modifier on the ALT key, I was able to shoot off the balls of.. well flies nearly. Keep in mind this isn't like a shooter where you have to move your mouse over the entire mouse pad, actually very little movement is required due to how the mouse controls work. A very low sensitivity is advised. Keep the deadzone around 20% on the mouse as well.
