de-lid, too hot

hi, i recently put my first build together and de-lidded via hammer and vixce my 4670k and after getting everything up and running i downloaded prime95 and began the journey of overclocking, once i found a ghz and voltage that i could get into windows with i discovered virtually everything i tested in small fts in prime or blend caused massive temps, i revered back to 3.4 ghz stock speed and put the volts back on auto and after 10 mins of prime 95 im still getting multiple cores in the mid 80s with 1 core lagging down on the mid 70s, i have a rear mounted h80i push pull and the fan that used to live in the exhaust at the back is acting as an under-sized roof exhaust fan for now, i used liquid ulta under the ihs and artic silver ontop of it (i wasnt sure if liquid ultra is opk with the block on h80i, admittedly as this is my first build i am a bit noobish, but these temps seem crazy to me is there anything obvious i may have buggered up to cause this? i expected to get 4.5ghz at 1.25/1.3 v atleast and below 80c in prime am i just beding wildly optimistic? weirdly idle temps are around 30 degrees, case is a coolermaster haf 912+ , sounds like a hurricane too but i will sort that later with diff fans when savedbut looking for immediate action plan. thanks all in advance
 
could be that the cpu cooler is not making full contact with the cpu die, because the metal heatspreader is not there anymore
 
i re attahed the ihs after i putthe liquid ultra between it and the die, could just be badly seated though i guess? or fucked up the artic pro?
 
and that is why i always advise against delidding.
either the cooler isn't seated properly or the heatspreader isn't seated properly or you have too much/too little TIM.
quite a bold move for a first build.
 
You probably moved the heatspreader around a bit by accident after putting it back on as not much was securing it in place, this caused the thermal paste to come of the die.
when you put the ihs back on, make sure it does not move around during the mounting of cpu cooler

regretfully bold, tore straight into the de-lid without checking temps first, which seems to be a fuck-up of monumental proportions, do you know if liquid pro is ok with being in contact with the block on h80i?, cheers mate
 
I always cringe when I see people doing the hammer and vice method :L It's like the most imprecise way of doing things. The razor blade method is surely the way to go.

There isn't any problems with your TIM touching the block, that's what it's supposed to do.

I'm surprised you didn't even see what your temps were before you started either.
 
The whole idea of delidding is that you are able to apply the cooler directly to the die, removing Intel's TIM and IHS from the CPU completely.

What you've done is removed a precision fitted component, slapped some goop on top of the die, plonked the lid back on, slapped on some more goop, and now you've got a CPU that performs worse than before you messed with it.

Not a great first build. Always beware of ambition exceeding talent.

I have still heard of people getting decent results doing this, simply due to the replacement of Intel's crappy TIM between the die and the IHS.
 
Had the same problem using Liquid Ultra. I even lapped the IHS to lessen the gap to the die. Finally I cleaned it and used Arctic MX4. Temps are better now.
 
Just my 2pence, i have heard that it takes time for CLU/CLP to burn in with the CPU regardless of whether it has been delidded or not.

How long has your temps been like this? I know possibly a week or 2 of running the computer, the temps will increase or be silly high, but after a while, once burnt in, temps will start to decrease back to normal.
