9900k - High Temps all of a sudden !

Morning All,

I'm really scratching my head here on an issue I got with my 9900k on a Maximus X Hero and H110i.

I haven't really been doing anything on my PC for a good few months now, I mostly remote into it from the office and run some VM's in Workstation which never puts it under stress.

Anyway, on Friday night I installed the new Cinebench after spotting the thread here with everybody's benchmarks, my first run BSOD'd WHEA Errors and I noticed temps hit over 100c almost instantly. I pulled the PC from under my desk an noticed quite a bit of dust in the rad so I got the Dyson on it and gave it a good clean, I also took of the waterblock and reapplied a fresh coat of thermal paste (Noctua NT-H1 - Not sure how old this tube is).

After putting back on the block and putting the PC back under my desk I dialled in a manual overclock 1.275v vcore with LLC 6 and set all cores to 5ghz and booted to windows, all is good and I ran a few cinebenchs, temps never exceeded low 90s.

A day later I am gaming Project Cars 2, ACE Combat and I can hear my fans ramping up to max, CPU is in the 70s which is not normal when gaming. I tried a cinebench run and BSOD again with temps hitting the 100s almost straight away.

So I set the bios to stock again and tried cinebench again, temps are now hitting hight 90s at stock instantly.

The way the temp hits high 90s is making me think that there is an issue with either the Thermal paste or my H110i pump.

iCue is showing pump doing its job spinng above 3000rpm and a water temp of in the 30s.

Any Ideas what the issue coud be ?

Things tried so far :

1) Clean Rad and reapply thermal paste - Fixed the issue for a few hours
2) Bios Flashback & stock settings - Still High temps
3) Ordered some Konductanaut on Amazon Prime will arrive tonight - will report back

Notes :

Vid seems very high -

Well to me it sounds a bit like you’ve got an defect AIO unit. Or maybe it has something to do with OC’ing and voltages, which someone else in here as to comment about, since that is out of my knowledge area.

I just reseated the cpu again and applied some old Konductonaut I had lying around, CPU temps are back to normal again @5ghz ... No idea what happened ??

I'd keep an eye on that...

If it happens again...see if one of the tubes leading from the block is warmer than the other...sure sign there's a flow problem of some kind

OP

Cinebench is the most demanding CPU bench I have seen so far and will knock over a lot of PCs with otherwise stable overclocks.

Test your setup with your normal software and see how things work out.

Getting over 100c again in R20 and R15, case is in bits at the moment, when I move the rad a bit temps drop, did a RMA with Amazon, new one should be here tomorrow !! Corsair products are a pile of dog shi* nowadays... Stay Away from them !

New H115i recevied this afternoon and installed.
Temps are much better, in fact the new pump is spinning at 2800rpm on extreme profile instead of over 3000rpm which obviously means that the old H115i pump was most probably spinning in a pocket of air.

Anyway I hope there has been no long term damage to my CPU, really not happy with Corsair products at the moment This is my 3rd H115i in just over 1 year. Im also on my 3rd Corsair Link. Thank God Amazon have no issue delivering next day for replacement.

Here is what the temps are now at with a Cinebench R20 run ->

Don’t get what people are moaning about/regarding Corsair really? If you have a bad experience with a product, sure it sucks, but that doesn’t mean that the company is automatically bad cause of it. And if it’s broken or defect, just contact them for a replacement part or just go buy another of the same product type. Why moan all over a forum about it? That no one will actually give a sh*t about, I mean for real here. And it will just make you look like an immature adult.

If your car breaks down, do you then ditch the manufacturer just because it broke?...

I’ve never had any issues with any of my Corsair products, and I’ve had several memory, AIOs and PSUs from them. But if I do have any issues, sure I ask for help here, but I don’t go flame the manufacturer behind it cause it’s a bad unit. This is technology people and technology unfortunately doesn’t always work to 100%.

In fact, nothing in life does, we just have to learn to live with it and move on, even if it does suck. That’s called life - grow up and deal with it!

It's an Asetek product with Corsair stickers anyway... Fact is that AIOs are prone to failure.

They are just a little bit to much prone to failure for my liking, imagine how many failed units are out there and there owners don't even know it.. Now if there was an alert in ICUE telling me that my pump was faulty (easy to detect because of the high pump rpm) then at least it shows that they care about their customers. Anywayz, gonna seriously think about putting in a custom loop. Been looking at it for a while now by I cannot get my head around the fittings and tubing.

What's hard to get for you? The fact that everything they release is crap? There AIOs have a history of bad quality. I would know. The original H100i that I have is my 3rd unit. It's always the pump. We've been designing pumps for many decades. There's really not much of an excuse. There cases and cases in general might I add, are also more expensive because "tempered glass" yet have overall lower quality than a few years ago and on top of that no airflow anymore. Causing other components to reach higher temperatures and decrease longevity.

Thanks for your statement that you've never had a Corsair issue. You clearly are lucky.
Next time you have an issue I'll just tell you suck it up and deal with. Go buy another one. Then you'll proceed to get mad and say "that's not very helpful or kind nor does it help me".
I'll reply with a screenshot of your post and remind you your post also doesn't help anyone and to get over it.

He can have his opinion. So can you. What's difficult to understand?

Thats almost like a "how long is a piece of string" comment.

Depends on the fault that caused it to break down. I had a Rover where i broke down to learn the head gasket warped on the engine. A common issue with all Rovers using K series engine since the head was made of cheap aluminium.

So now knowing its a common fault and would occur with all replaced engines/heads. Let me ask you... knowing that fact, would you buy from Rover again?

I think the logic here is that Corsair has never actually made an AIO cooler, so saying they're bad at making AIO coolers or their coolers have consistently higher failure rates than other companies using more or less the same parts as them with a different sticker doesn't make much sense, their designs have all been either CoolIT or Asetek products with some Corsair branding.

However, saying they're over priced, don't come with good enough warranty, ect are all perfectly valid complaints, and obviously with other products there are many they manufacture themselves that have fallen short recently.

On topic though I think Corsairs CoolIt based designs usually have a better track record than their Asetek ones, but I know many H110i variants from either company have released over the years so it could be either.

Personally I never understand this whole "I had one bad experience so I boycott the company" thing though, often products across different segments are designed by completely different parts of the company, completely different people with different operating principles & experiences & so on, I think it's always best to look for common product faults on a product by product basis because the more you spend on an product especially with electronics, the higher its failure rate is likely to be due to the increased complexity, and even the most perfect of designs & assembly lines will have 1 in 100 faults. But I do think Corsair as a wider company & brand has lost touch with what made them successful.

Well my point was, if I made myself unclear, was that basically every manufacturers and companies products may fail. That doesn’t mean the company itself is bad.

That is your opinion as well. In my opinion, I don’t think that everything they have is crap.

Yeah, you do that, cause it won’t matter anyway. As most of the time I’ve asked for help in here, you haven’t replied and helped.

I never said anything about him, his post nor his opnion on this. In fact, I was the first to respond to his thread, suggesting that the unit might be defect.

My post was regarding/towards everyone else that was basically flaming a company for products that failed on them. Which sucks, it has happened to me as well, just not with a Corsair product. But that doesn’t mean I go around and flaming them for it.

Thats almost like a "how long is a piece of string" comment.

Maybe, maybe not. Not sure, as it depends on the situation itself... Again, that doesn’t mean that just becuase one of their car is bad, that all of theirs is.

Hope this made my previous post and what I meant/mean more clearly. I’ll check out now, since this has derailed from the OP thread.

OP, hope you got your issue sorted with your new unit.

If you looked above you would see that the issue is now resolved.
But it will surely fail again in the coming months.

The first time it failed it was obvious because the pump was making a terrible noise, second time high temps and high pump rpm. The third time might be something different, only time will tell....

That's because you weren't around to remember when Corsair REALLY was the king of PC. They did so much. Every product was top notch quality, innovative. Known mostly for cases but whenever they entered another market they did amazing. Since the take over it's gone downhill. So no it's not my opinion. It's fact. They've nothing since then and gotten worse. Only good stuff now is memory (because they put a sticker on it), and PSU(they put a sticker on it). That's about it. Both of which are designs we've worked on for decades. It shouldn't be difficult.
I don't bother helping you because you're answers are a 10 second Google search away. Besides that I'm not active much anymore. I get on for Marks news updates then get off. Couldn't help you because I wouldn't notice
