I guess I don't understand DNSs completely. Either way, you can always use a free DNS like http://everydns.net for all your DNS needs. Not in the mood to google so that's all you get :p

So run yourself a little website of you're computer :p that's what i always did.

Firstly are you using Linux or Windows?

If you are using Linux I think opendns will do it for you.

Obviously you can't use it out on the web if you are going to change stuff.

Im a Windows guy.. :)

But can Linux comunicate with Windows? I guess it can.. therefore.. setting up a Linux DNS maybe easier?

I am not sure but I have more experience with Linux and think it would probably be more valuable knowing how to do it in Linux.

I would download VMWare Server and the netinst Debian iso. Once you get that installed I would install opendns through apt.

PowerDNS.com mate. They do builds for Linux and Windows. It has replication, a web interface and providing you read the manual - its fairly easy to set up.

Just a warning: DNS is not fun if it goes wrong :p

If you need a hand setting up, let me know. I run a DNS service provider for about a year ;)

If you are just going to play with dns, windows 2k3 has a DNS server option. Under the server management pages.

If you are going to use it publicly, you need a static ip.

`When I were a lad`, in the days of dial-up there were/was a dns.org kinda site that would change the ip in relation to u`r new allocated ip address. Something along the lines of as soon as u logged into windows/whatever and went online, it would send a message to the dns.org/site and change it each time for u. Either that or u could make a shortcut to do it.

Yep there's still a few of those around. I used to use no-ip.com before I got a static address.

However, if you want to run your own DNS server, it needs to be done from a static IP as the records for your servers need to be set up with the domain registrar and there's no way to dynamically update them.

If I don't have a static IP.. which I probably don't.. How would I go about getting one? :)

Thanks for the info so far guys!

Depends on your ISP - some you may just be able to request one, some may already have given you one, others you may have to pay for one

Speak to your ISP. If they are nice they'll give you one for free.

goto a site called whatismyip.com see what your ip is. reconnect your modem/router and see if its the same. Should also note that you ip wont change every time you reconnect.

I think the easy way would be to get in contact with your ISP

If your with idnet you get a static one by default.

Sugar.. Its not static.. :(

Ring ring time!

EDIT: The IP only changes if I disconnect the router, right?

Could I just not disconnect the router? I mean, It hasn't been offline for ages.

So back onto the challenge! :D

I use this software called PowerDNS?

What does this software do? And how to work it?

thats fine, but with the nature of adsl and even more so with adslmax, your gonna get alot of changes. You would end up changing where the URL pointed to probs once a week.
