CPU Upgrade Time

To cut a long story short, I'm upgrading my FX6300 which has been running at 4.5Ghz for the last 2 years. My two options are i5 6600 + z170/h170 + DDR4, or a 4690k + z97 and re-using my current DDR3. The price is significantly greater on the z170/h170 platform due to having to re-buy ram, and also performance might be marginal, due to not overclocking. The z97 platform will be cheaper + I'm thinking that pushing the CPU to around 4.5/4.6 should be a doddle, which will likely mean it will outperform the 6600? Looking for the best value for money, primary usage will be gaming (~85%, 10% movies, 5% music, 0.001% word/excel/other non resource-intensive uni work).

Thanks to all.

Why the 6600? You could get the k for not much more and still OC it. Either way I'd say get the Z97 platform. For gaming it's still enough and not that much slower. And since you'll be OC'ing the 4690k it'll surpass the 6600.

The 6600 is super cheap on amazon right now, that's why I'm even considering it... since I'm also upgrading the GPU to a 970, I have no leeway and have to be very strict with the cpu budget.

Buying a locked CPU = act in haste repent at leisure. I've only done it once myself. Soon learned never to do it again.
