Buying new CPU + Mobo need advise

Advice** sorry for my spelling... Hello, i want to upgrade to a 4690k and a msi z97-g55 SLI.

I currently have a gtx 670, 2x 256gb 840 EVOs, H70 watercooler and 4gb 1600mhz 1.65v cl8 crucial ballistix.

i would like to go with an SLI board so i can add a 2nd gtx 670 at a later date maybe and i will also be getting 8GB of RAM ASAP but the 4gb will have to do for now. If i get a 2nd graphics card i will also need a new PSU so maybe i would be better getting a cheaper single slot board and getting a stronger single graphics card later down the line?

Cheapest i can find the 4690k is £163 at Aria and the Z97-G55 is £85 at Amazon. This puts me slightly over my £230 budget so does anyone know of anywhere cheaper, or alternative components?

your input would be greatly appreciated.

you haven't mentioned what PSU you're using.

Edit-
Ignore me lol

i thought one of the things you were asking is if you would need a new PSu for the 2nd card. misread lol

Are you going to go with the free delivery at Amazon? If not: buy the mobo at Aria. It's 1 pound more expensive, but you can scratch the delivery costs so it'll turn out a bit cheaper.

Get rid of that and buy a better psu
Me and one other forum member (i think it was waithguard or radeonhdx had the same psu (ocz 500w ModXstream) blow.

Mine blew when i flipped the switch at the back

the psu's by ocz are crap right now

I do agree with the other forum members: you really should change out your PSU asap!

On a side note: I just found a Z87-G45 Gaming for under 80 quid at Scan. Did some research and it should be compatible with the new Devil's Canyon chips, it might require a bios-flash though. The Z87-G45 Gaming is 2-way SLI compatible and by al means a great board for the price :)

Hope this helped a bit ;)

It was wraith :(. It took his 6870 and I think it took his SSD (but don't quote me on that) If I were you, the first thing on my upgrade list would be to get a decent wattage and brand PSU because every second you run that PSU is another second you're risking your rig popping. They're like time bombs :(.

I realize that this probably wasn't your expected upgrade path but you're risking a whole rebuild when the solution is just one upgrade. Hope I've helped :).

thanks guys, i think its best for me to do as you say and get a psu now, i was thinking the rm650 or something quiet. my 965 will have to do me a few more months! :D.

edit.
or EVGA SuperNOVA 650W is cheaper as long as it isn't too loud.

Thanks, that board should do what i need. Ill have to save up some more cash though, i might sell my Dell 17r SE and use the cash for a full new build then i could afford some quiet fans and a new case also.

You're welcome mate! Glad I could be of help :)

Also, I see you're relatively new here, so: Welcome to the forums! ;) (it's a bit late, but better late than never right?)

yes yes im a noob lol. thanks, its never to late :D. I had not considered that i could use a z87 board, and tbh im not against getting a 4670k if the price is right either. Anyway ill get some RAM and a PSU now and save up for the rest. Got an old jackson guitar i can sell for extra gaming funds!

One thing you might be able to answer, If i bought some 2400mhz RAM now would it be OK running at 1333mhz on my current system then i can use that same RAM after i upgrade?

^^ Don't worry mate, everyone starts as a noob, though you're eager to learn so I'm sure that'll change soon ;)

About the RAM: that should be absolutely no problem! Though if you're only going to use your PC for gaming, you really don't need 2400MHz RAM: 1600MHz would be enough :)

EDIT: forgot to add: if you have any questions about the forums, feel free to ask!

ok great and i guess i wont be able to have it at 2400 anyway if i overclock the 4670k/4690k maybe go for 2133 since its cheap enough

edit: WHEN i overclock the 4670k/4690k

If you can get a good deal on 2133MHz memory, go for it :) Though if the difference with 1600 / 1866MHz Memory is moderate (I'd say £15+), you might be able to spend it on a better mobo or something like that :)

Though by all means, I'm not an expert on memory at all, so it might be a good idea to ask another forum member about this too ;)

looks like there is only about £2 difference in it can get 8gb 2133 kingston hyperX for £57.81 or £56.09 for 1866.

anyway i think i have a plan now so thanks again, and thank you to everyone else who commented as well. :)
