Building a computer for the old man, just need some advice...

Hey guys, just a quick one. I'm not completely up to date with all the new gear that's come out recently and my old man is up for a new PC for general buggerising about and playing a few flight sims here and there.

If you have the time, could you give the build I proposed to him a look over and let me know if it's solid or needs some tinkering?

Keep in mind it's on a budget, he is not looking to spend any more than $1400 - $1600, and I've narrowed it down to somewhere in between.

If this is the wrong place to post this please don't be to harsh, I am a noob after all

Cheers for any help guys.

You could save some money and get away with a lower wattage power supply, 650w would be more than plenty with that system. A good quality 550w would even be enough. Antec make decent PSUs, but I prefer Corsair.

The specs of that system look great. The P67 chipset has that recall, but if you only use two SATA devices on the first two SATA ports you shouldn't have to worry. I'm not sure how availability will be affected with the recall.

Oooh, a recall?? Didn't hear about that, thanks for the heads up mate. Is that issue on Gigabyte mobos, or just affecting the ASUS ones? I'm partial to Gigabyte myself and the new ones look nice as. IIRC, in his video review Tom mentioned that the BIOS on the ASUS mobos were better atm generally, but if that issue is not present on the Gigabyte I might swap over to a UD5 or something like that.

I wasn't sure about power consumption on all the gear together, and I generally tend to go bigger with PSUs than smaller. I did mention SLI to my old man, and while he is probably not really interested in it atm, he did seem generally interested in going SLI at some point in the future. This is why I chose the bigger PSU instead of a smaller one...future proofing and all that, plus he has a whole heap of extra HDD's I know he will chuck into this system.

Thanks heaps for the pointers mate, I'll definitely take them on board.

Also cheers to whoever moved this post!! I just knew it was in the wrong spot

The recall affects all P67 boards right now. Gigabyte has already started their replacement program.

Some e-tailers have already started pulling stock. On newegg you can't even buy Sandy Bridge CPUs.
