Buffalo drives stopped working..

Hey, so I just set up my new system, and used the sysprep utility to migrate my old internal HDD with my Windows 7 install over, but I've run into a slight issue; neither of my 2TB external Buffalo Drivestations are working.

They don't appear under Device Manager under USB, but there are two instances of "Universal Serial Bus(USB) Controller" and two of "Unknown Device" in the Other Devices category, but no matter what I try I can't get my system to recognise them and download the generic drivers. I tried killing all the USB drivers in device manager, and on reboot it successfully reinstalled every single one, except for those specific instances, which it keeps insisting "no driver found".

I can't even download Buffalo's DriveNavi software to see if there are usable drivers contained therein, because their bloody worthless website requires you to enter serial numbers to do anything, and those numbers aren't on the drives themselves but the driver disc sleeve

When I plug the drives in I get the standard "you've just plugged in a USB device" noise, but nothing else happens. Can anyone suggest what I could try to get these working? All of my backups are on them.

First thing I'd try is uninstalling the USB controllers in Device Manager (right click, uninstall), then do a "Scan for hardware changes" (top bar, computer with a magnifying glass) and try plugging the drives in again. Failing that, check the motherboard manufacturer's website for any USB drivers they might have.

As I said chief, I already tried nuking everything in the Device Manager, no matter what I do it always comes back with "no driver found". As for the mobo drivers, I literally put this machine together yesterday, it's just had the full whack of drivers right off the install disc, there aren't any different ones on MSI's site.

EDIT: See what I mean?

Use DiskGenius or something similar. Diskgenius may let you see the contents of the drives. I've had similar issues to this in the past and Diskgenius has always pulled through for me.

I'll give it a bash thanks, but I don't see how software will be able to detect the drives if Windows can't and there are no drivers. EDIT: Yep, doesn't see them.

You say it's a new build, have you installed the USB3 drivers off your MSI disc that came with the Mpower?,i know my board didn't pick ant thing up until i installed them.

OK, well, having tried everything I could think of(including drowning my sorrows), I decided screw it, and downloaded the two USB3 drivers from MSI's website, despite having already run the provided installer for them on the disc and the ones on the site being the same version.

Well, for some stupid reason, installing the exact same drivers from zip files rather than the discs worked, Windows now recognises the drives and locates the proper drivers for them. Sometimes I think computers were invented solely to irritate and annoy anyone who finds them interesting :P
