Better LCD Clarity

I think I may be insane. I have a dual boot of windows xp and xp MCE... now while updating MCE... something i dont do on XP I noticed that it had a driver or something for my particular monitor, a Dell 2005FPW... upon a reboot i have noticed something that i thought was a fluke but seems consistent, pictures, high quality that is... are damn near as clear as they were when I had a CRT... if you have an lcd you know that powdery texture closeups of skin can have... well thats gone now... am I crazy or is there something to that driver doohickey...

I've noticed that Windows XP now loads up a monitor driver when prompted for my monitor whereas it used to do it automatically before. Not noticed the skin thing tho :eh:

Still: as long as its better ey? :)

it can happen mate, small changes in contrast etc. maybe the picture could have been acquired before, which the right settings, but these drivers make them more accessible.

You didnt happen to get a new set of glasses this week did you? ;)

All i'll say is that with drivers anything is possible. Maybe they just tweaked the colour settings a bit? I'm one for just installing the drivers and not configuring the options, so i could probably make things look a lot nicer even on my screen.

yea it just eliminated the one thing i missed from CRT... pictures of people... especially the special pictures :) looked like shit when i first got this monitor... and i was sorta mad... its only with those types of pictures... not the magazine type... but online only ones.... they look good now.... now im happy... i wasnt that bothered but yea im 100% sure that the change has happened.... i figured that the skin texture issue must have been something fixable since all the reviews about LCD vs CRT never mentioned it...

well in response to that im assuming that either the driver unlocked something.... or that MCE has some tweaks beyond windows regular cleartype.... or perhaps enhanced... but i dont think/know whether cleartype affects photos...

EDIT: oh i thought you said cant... hehe whoops

EDIT2: to xms.. yea well i only installed the driver for this monitor one other time when i first bought it.... and thats only because it wasnt working OOTB for some reason... but each install after that it has worked fine so i never bothered... its just that since im trying MCE im actually updating like i should.... and yea one of the updates broke InstallShield's ikernel.exe so I had to go reinstall that... thats why i dont use windows updates.... because that broke my pc so i had to spend an extra 30 mins to work my soundcard because i couldnt find the ikernel update so that i could install my sb drivers...

to kempez i still want that cd... although i did manage to salvage the apps i needed from the cd i have... perhaps i should try a recovery tool? do those read slower or soemthing to get the hard to get data copied?

i found the culprit.. the driver installed an ICC profile for my display... that is what makes the display look so much better...

not 100% sure... but when i was editing the gamma and all that in my nvidia console... i clicked the import key and it showed a bunch of ICC profiles... and i saw something i had never seen before... a profile named after my dell.... so ya... thats what makes it work better... ill google icc profile in a sec... i think i may be selling my dell... dunno... right now im using my projector and i cant imagine going back :)
