About to take the plunge---upgrading to SSD

All,

I was toying with the idea of a SATA III SSD since I'll be able to take advantage of it when I upgrade the cpu/mobo/RAM in my current sig rig. I read good things about the Crucial 128GB C300 and M4. Initially, I was looking at the Mushkin Callisto DX2's because I like the brand and I thought I'd be willing to pay a bit extra for the convenience of more space (like the 240GB), I'm sure I'd be able to get away with 128GB if I HAD to. The Crucial 240GB's are a bit more than I am willing to pay.

But the more I think about it, the more I am inclined to grab the 128GB C300 which I've read really good things about. My next major upgrade (mb next 6 months) will certainly support SATA III and I save about $150 (which will almost pay for Win7 home premium that I am buying at the same time).

Is it worth going with the SATA III; will the increased throughput be noticeably different in the real world?

Does anyone know how much usable space these have--120GB like the Mushkin 128GB's had?

I've heard that the new SF 2200 controllers might have issues--true? Should this be a concern?

Any other considerations I should think about that may affect my decision?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I'm using 2 of the C300 64's in raid ZERO issues so far love them best 99$ each I spent with the 2 in raid I have 117GB of space pre install of Win7 Premium cant say enough about thier performance they have been awesome. Very snappy and fast. I'd imagine with a single drive you'd have a tad more than 117GB. post win7 install I had about 105free currently have 100GB free lol I run everything off my other raids so space is kinda wasted but hey why not

I may end up doing some changes and putting it all on my SSD raid and use the other hdd's in a dock station. Still playing out the idea in my head.

no its still true but you have garbage collection which is basically Trim for Raid While trim operates in the background while you do stuff garbage collection need to be at idle to work so now instead of shutting down my comp when I'm done I leave it on for a couple hours and then normally lol go back to surfing/gaming lmao. but it works fine

Thanks a ton for the info. I just ordered a 128Gb Crucial M4 with a WD caviar black so I'm looking forward to seeing the difference the new HD's make.

been seeing some of these newer drives claim BGC or background garbage collection for raid mesa wondering if that means trim like GC ????
