Alrite there guys long time no see:). I baught a 9800 gt today and was looking farward to setting it up and seeing what it could do, i installed the card as was explained and all drivers etc, launched css and did a vid stress test, and it came back only 30fps more than my old card (radeon x1950pro) so i was wondering if the card is much butter or should i take it back and get another (ideas please). my setup atm is e6600 dual core, 2gb ram, 550w psu.

What settings were you running the test at on your new/old graphics card?

For example, you could've been running it at 800x600 on medium on your old card. Then you could've been running it at 1280x1024 on all high with AA and AF on your new card, you still notice an improvement.

JSYK, the 9800GT is nothing much more than a rebadged 8800GT. Its a decent card if you can find one cheaper than the 8800GT.

:D

umm, i did both on a 800x600 res, would i maybe be better off taking it back to the shop and trading it in for a 8800 and get £10back.

Thats what I'd reccomend.

Mind telling me exactly what settings/fps you got on both cards? I'll try my best to fix the problem. :)

CSS is a heavy CPU dependant game. That is a waste of money..

What FPS do you get normally on that card with your current set up?

I get around 220FPS with my current set up, what do you get?

i had exact same in game settings through configs, and i got 650 something with my x1950 (did the stress a while ago) and 705 with the 9800. cheers for the help mate.

in game it hangs around the 90-102 mark (capped @ 102) but if theres alot going on, it can drop to 60-70

Au contraire.

CS:S is one of the least CPU dependant games out ATM. It uses the source engine which isnt CPU dependant at all. TF2 uses a later version of the source engine, this is why TF2 takes a better computer to run.

@OP: Due to personal experience, I wouldn't reccomend having more FPS than your monitors' refresh rate. IIRC, this causes some frames not to be synced correctly and causes tears in the screen. If your interested in more frames, take the cap off.

I bet you differ bud. I have my GPU at clock speeds and I get the same FPS as if I have it OCed.. maybe a couple of FPS diff (it always varies as you know)

The couple of FPS could be the overclock...

I know for a fact that CS:S is one of the less CPU dependant modern games.

Back onto the problem, have you tried upping the resolution?

I still argue with you on that.. CS 1.6 can run maxed out on onboard graphics and the new CSS isn't much of an upgrade.. runs pretty nicely on my dads onboard graphics on his laptop!

I get a drop to around 70FPS in very busy situations to be honest but that is expected.. all the sudden power usage must compromise from somewhere!

Right, I think that I am going to OC my graphics and see if I get a better result.. give you the results in a bit guys :)

DOH!

I picked the wrong arguement.

I thought you meant that CSS is heavy on the CPU. Instead, you meant that it is CPU dependant.

Ah ok. My bad! :p

TMDD strikes again ROFL.

Okay you understand me now :) Good good!

Right, well I think if you really want to get more FPS on CSS bud you need to turn up the clocks on your CPU. Get a better cooler and OC like hell :D
