For 500 bucks you can probably do a lot better than that.

Have a look at the Asus Xonar Essence STX, and pair that up with a high quality headset.

Say, for example, a Sennheiser HD598 and add a clip-on mic like the Zalman ZM-Mic1.. and you've got yourself a rock-solid setup! It will even be great for listening to music and watching movies, which most gaming headsets are not. I know you will be using it mostly for gaming, but hey, it never hurts to have great audio quality!

Alternatively, if you really don't want a clip-on mic, you could get a high quality headset. I have the Sennheiser PC360 G4me which truly is an awesome headset. There is no gaming headset that beats it when this thing is paired with a decent sound card. It's a good alround pair of headphones with a boom microphone. The only downside to this thing is that it's fairly expensive, but with a budget of 500 dollars that shouldn't be an issue.

A good alternative is the AKG GHS-1 gaming headset.

If you absolutely have to have a mic on the headset then I second the Asus Essence STX, it is very good.

Personally I would (have) gone for music headphones and a soundcard with a clip on mic, the quality per $ is better that way.

Wow, you have 500 bucks and you are considering 'gaming,' headphones. Man, for 500 smackers, an STX card and a set of Denon AHD-2000's would be right at the top of my list. DO NOT WASTE your money on gaming headphones, they simulate, poorly at 5:1, offer crap price to performance, poor build quality etc etc. I've said it before and I'll say it again, a decent set of music cans will kick the arse of ANY gaming headphone, no matter what.

If you are going to drop $500 you are wasting your money on ANY gaming headset. ALL gaming headsets are garbage quality when you compare it to an equally priced audiophile headset.

Yeah agreed. I own a '7.1' gaming headset, I think it's great for what it is and even the microphone is crystal clear. They're pretty good for £60/$90 all things considered. However I think when you're spending $500 you should be looking for a proper good headset, do a bit of research and you'll probably come to the same conclusion as Pexon; something like Denon AHD 2000's and a good sound card.

Denon AHD 2000, Audio Technica A900, Beyerdynamic DY770/880/990, there is loads of good cans around 300-400. I'd go for the Denon at that price, they are VERY good quality, I'd kill for a pair, my next headphones are going to be some Grado ones, if you like rock/ metal music Grado are the ones.

I would go for the Asus Xonar Xense combo. You get a great sound card and also a great set of headphones.

The PC350s are very good and all this is under your budget.

I think $500 is a very high budget and yo may as well invest the money else where. Even getting gaming headphones for that much is hard

id suggest getting a razer megladon ! , that way ull have cash to spare to buy an soundblaster hd sound card and even speakers while ur at it !

or just a nice weekend holiday

Or just stop being a tramp and get an epic pair of cans and a sound card and amp for games and music

Do as others have said and get a a nice soundcard amp and microphone. OP since you seem to not know what you want, maybe $500 is a little bit too much for your first decent audio setup.

Definitely don't listen to this advice. Megalodons aren't good and they wouldn't take any advantage from that soundcard as they are usb.

Yea man, I can't say it enough times, DO NOT GET A GAMING HEADSET! Even the Sennhiser PC series aren't as good as music cans. I bet a set of Koss Porta- Pro's are better than 99% of gaming headsets.

It will definitely beat gaming headsets that are in the same price range, but it's miles behind the PC360 ;')

A bet they would give them a run for their money. Some Audio Technica AD-700's or some Sony MDR-V6's would completely destroy a set of PC 360's.

don't diss the megladon

its a good headset , perhaps not the one ur looking for if u want to go professional music

but if its only for gaming i don't see why u need to spend loads

Because for games, some people, like me appreciate good sound qaulity and not complete and utter garbage that most gamer stuff is. Dont get me started on Razer, they are the Beats or Apple of the PC world.
