Scientists in the USA have discovered a type of light absorbing protein that would allow them to create DVD sized discs with a storage capacity of up to 50,000 GB

hhmm what would i do with 50tb...copy my entire harddrive content about 80 times or so :rocker: :rocker: :rocker:

LOL terror's mind in overdrive already, along with many other 'collectors' I guess rofl. No doubt though, holographic storage and it's hybrids are deffo the way of the future :yumyum:

Sounds like a rehashed version of holographic storage... I still can't wait for that to hit :)
Nah, as far as I know, it's a completely different method. As for it hitting the stores, that probably isn't going to be for a while (like 3-5 years at least I guess).

Yeah it has to do with some protein that changes its chemical compound when light hits it at different directions etc, different from holographic storage but the capacity's are pretty close compared to the size of the medium.

300GB to 50TB? I'll er take the 50TB ;).

The biggest ive heard of is 1Tb, and the biggest going up for retail this year is probably going to be 300Gb.

They're puting holographic storage on the mainstream market this year? Holy damn, I thought it was like 3+ years off.

This holographic business anything to do with that process of using electons to create a disc layout that can store PicoBytes?

I thought Pico was a measurement of something really small (< nano)?

Disappointing...A measly 300Gb release, on something that could exponentially change storage as we know it. They should of at least provided 1Tb as a release drive :(

Yeah it does seem a bit strange why they'd bother releasing a 300gb drive - unless of course it has some major performance advantages?

Personally I havn't read up mych on this Tech, does the performance differ much?

I'm the same as you XMS, I must admit I'm a little 'behind' on it. Surely it'd have to bring something else to the table...other than potential capacity.
