Windows Media Center & Dual Core CPU

Hey guys,

I might be building a media center PC for my friend with a Conroe CPU... I have never installed Windows on a system with a dual core cpu although I remember telling my friend about hitting a key in Windows XP Pro installation so it can utilise both cores... (that was over a year ago and i cant remember now )

Can someone give me a pre-guide on how to do this or post a link ?

i dont think there is a "key" to make it use both cores. You just install it and windows detects it. You may be thinking of the SATA Raid drivers where you have to press F6 at the beginning of win setup.

I think i know what he means, when you setup windows there is a part where you to choose the processor type during setup. Thats about all i can remember tho.. soz

hmmm, never seen that. conroe's are still x86 processor's. so it's the same instruction set. ........i think

Windows MCE will automatically detect a dual-core CPU just like XP/2k3, etc. etc. There should be no additional setup required to have it utilize both cores.

Nothing needs to be done. I reinstalled windows on my Conroe yesterday - works 100% without any drivers or alternative jiggery.

Yeah windows autodetects the two cores and balances them pretty well

theres one called uniprocessor and another one. Can those with dual cores list what they have as well as us poor single core people just for my own interest

I don't understand what you mean?

I had an X2 4400+, an Opteron 175 and now I have an E6600. These all have two physocal and two logical processors

At work I have a P4 630 with HT which is one physocal processor and uses HT to have 2 logical processors.

Windows Task manager load balances all of the above with no problems whatsoever (the AMD's needed the Dual core fix)

uniprocessor does mean 1 cpu were mutiprocessor is more then one in device manager under computer. You dont change that unless some odd reason windows detected it wrong or you went from a single core cpu to dual core and windows didnt update that correct.
