Hey guy, having recently bought an SSD and installing windows on it, i can't seem to access any of the folders on my 1TB that have my events and holidays photo's in them. I'm the only Administrator on the computer. How do i enable access to them or the whole drive? It doesn't want to let me access even though im using the only Admin account of even change privileges.

Go into device manager>disk management, click on your 1TB drive in the box with the blue boarder, right click on it, and then there should be an option to assign it a drive letter, once you do that you should have access.

I have attached a link to a download which you just run and it adds it to the registry you then right click on the folder you want permissions for and select take ownership let it do its stuff and bingo you have access

Still doesn't work for me, i changed the drive letter, still no luck. Previously when i have re installed windows, i never had this problem. I just checked other folders on the 1tb and they are fine, its just my pictures for which has somehow protected itself, even from me, the Admin of the pc.

All folders on drive are read-only, when i untick the box and click ok, they still return as read only

There' s a padlock now showing on the folder, how do i remove this and the read-only option that has been somehow applied to every file and folder on the drive?

hi dispzy,

the read-only thing is normal, now have you check the security nab in the folder properties to make sure your account as access

Its working fine automatically now. The padlock is still the corner of the folder but im now able to access and view the files. The weird thing was that i did have full control set to my account in the security tab.

did you have windows installed on that drive before by any chance?? if so its as the old user accounts we're the admins on them. Take ownership should fo it, if not right click on the disk in 'my computer', go to 'properties', then to the 'security tab'. when there edit the permissions so you have full control. Hope it helps.

but the 1tb was always used as a data drive as i previously had win7 installed on a 160gb HDD. I done what you mentioned many times but it didn't want to work.

Will formatting the 1tb work after i have backed it all up or will the protection be copied along with the files and folders?

on the 1tb drive it cannot apply the security or ownership to any files, The administrator has a red X on it. This is becoming such a headache for me, not being able to access my files. Isn't there a way to remove all security and start from fresh? everytime i click on folder its asking me, "You do not currently have permission to access this folder" or "Access denied"
