win 7 vs 8.1 (I have both)

I have windows 8.1 and windows 7 ultimate I'm unsure what to use on my new build, I am testing out windows 8.1 on a laptop and so far its driving me nuts with the constant windows is not activated even though I have phoned up.

Any way in the past with windows 8 I didn't have much luck getting older games running specially those that need windows live to run (street fighter was the worse culprit)

Windows 7 nothing I can moan about.

Now reason I'm asking will I see any real advantages using windows 8.1 over 7? specially since as a user I turn of every thing and I mean every thing I don't even have a browser, instead I would have the os booting straight into steam

should I just sell my windows 8 upgrade key?

*I use Linux for every thing and download window, drivers, software using another machine

If your rig has an AMD FX series cpu or an AMD apu then I would say go with windows 8 as it has undergone some under the hood changes to improve the support for newer amd architecture.

This. 8.1 is better for AMD cpus as it makes better use of the cores.

windows 8 is a better optimized, therefor you need to deal with metro and incompatibility issues. win 7 all the way.

Windows 8 is Windows 7 with features, the only differences are the Metro screen which you don't have to use and the lack of a start button which you can get back by installing start8.

Apart from that there are no differences, only improvements.

I've been using Windows 8 since release BTW.

There is something wrong with your setup, all games run perfect on my PC and i'm pretty sure they do on everyone else's running Windows 8. You would see a lot more threads about it here and everywhere else if this was the case for everyone.

cod4 runs like hell on win8.
i also don't use win8 because i don't want to spend time setting up and getting rid of stuff if i can just use win7 and have no problems.

Its a intel and nvidia setup I will be using, as I stated before I did have some issues with games under windows 8 they would load up than blank screen than you get the typical error and send a report of.
Downgrade to windows 7 issues gone.

I finnaly got windows 8.1 run on the laptop to test it out till my pc is built and activation was a b*tch thou 5 attempts each time it would be fine till I rebooted, even did the phone activation no luck.
Phone up Microsoft told I would have to buy another key. gave it one last try and got it working ..so far not impressed

Was it OEM windows 8.1?

Nope not a OEM one.
Bought when Microsoft was doing there upgrade from windows 7 to 8 for cheap (can't remember the price)

Art first I installed win 7 than upgrade no luck
Than just did a clean install of 8 and eventually it worked =/

About the start button, why do you really need it?
In Win 8, there is a search function with WINDOWS KEY+Q.
It makes things much easier for users who aren't coputer savvy and have used the start button all of their time using computers. It makes no sense to really get rid of it.

True, but by that reasoning, nobody on this forum has the right to complain about it.

I can complain as its a massive problem at my work now. People (who aren't computer savvy) have so many effing issues with their new windows 8 laptops. Once a start bar is added it makes things much, much easier both in a user and in a support roll. I have a start bar on my w8 laptop, which is one of the ones that turns into a tablet and it makes it much, much easier to use. Oh and windows 8 has a lot of driver issues still as well.
for the record though, the touch detection in windows 8 is really very good and precise. I'd say as good as my iphone!

Well thats complaining on behalf of other people, but I guess that it's a fair enough point. I, myself, like it, but thats just me. Eventually, you just get tired of an OS. Well at least I do.
