Why do people still use CDs

They're 700mB. The minimum size flash drive you can buy these days is 4gB. They came out in 1982 so are more than 3 decades old. If someone told you that a 3 decade old technology is still being used today in computers, you'd laugh at them. You might say they're cheap but a gigabyte of nand memory isn't that expensive either. They're also really big and easy to break or scratch. So, why do people use them?

I guess it's just because a lot of people are used to using them. It's something they are familiar with.

I only use them for drivers, i think the major tech companies should start putting drivers on usb sticks from now on.

i have over 30 retail games, some of which can be bought online now but not at the time.

My one and only excuse to have an optical drive in my pc is this, for example:

Saints Row III
Store: €20,-
Steam: €50,-

Far Cry 3
Store: €35,-
Steam: €60,-

Mafia II
Store: €7,-
Steam: €30,- (not even kidding)

So yeaahhh, in Europe Steam games appear to be much more expensive compared to GBP and Dollars =\

besides you can pick up many great titles from bargain bins, simcity, sims, even found diablo 2 once

I have a bunch of old games on CD's like the original Quake III, but that's it. Other than that, I wouldn't even bother putting in an optical drive in a new build.

If only companies started shipping software on usb sticks :/. I'm pretty sure ultrabooks don't have an optical drive and with windows 8 pro tablets coming out usb would be a far better way of distributing it. then again i guess people don't like change.

Just imagine a media store full of flash drives...
But I actually think companies still prefer CDs because it's data printed in a disc.
No electronics involved that could get dodgy in transport...

If stores wouldn't have CDs anymore, I bet some people would try to RMA a "music flash drive" just because they didn't like the songs

Lmfao, I remember watching a Linus unboxing of a laptop that came with a couple of discs but it had no optical drive xD

Win Xp is on CD.

I use the every once in a while cause theyre dirt cheap. You can get a waist high stack of blank CD-R's for a song and dance these days. If you dont need mass amounts of storage, theyre handy.

Plus I am an avid car audio enthusiast and compete regularly in sound quality competitions and CD's are still where its at. Plus I have a $1200 Pioneer CD player so there is no way Im going to stop using CD's for music anytime soon.
