Which GTX580 for air overclocking?

Ok so I want to test one of two GTX 580's for gaming and overclocking in my upcoming rig. Thing is, a new beast came to the market the Asus Matrix GTX 580. I do not know if I should go for the MSI Lightning or the Asus Matrix? I want to know what the community would go with

Post bellow which you would or are going to get and exactly why you choose the one you did as well as showing the cons of the competition.

Please give your reasons. I.E. Features, Specs, etc. Not just Lightning or Lightning all the way.

msi lightning.

Afterburner is easier to use. But ASUS smart doctor lets you go crazy high with voltages.

Lightning has 3gb of ram. The biggest drawback to the 580 is its 1500mb of video ram, the core is fast but the lack of ram holds it back.

Lightning has some nifty features like reverse fan spin to remove dust, and color changing fans.

Lighting only takes 2 slots instead of 3.

Hmmmmm very good argument but, sense there competition has 3GB I am pretty sure there will be a Matrix 3 GB too

. I am actually thinking of eventually running SLI so I may get a Matrix and a Lightning and see what happens XD Maybe do a side by side comparison that way

i am pretty sure that if you got the matrix and the lightning then sli'd them you will only use 1.5gb of the lightning.

I do not plan to run a 3GB version but, as I said most likely there will be a Matrix 3GB version and if I ran the lightning and the Matrix together I would use matching Memory versions. So if I decided to run a 3GB card, I would wait for the 3GB Matrix.

I'd be curious to see which would perform better.

580 GTX Lightning SLI or a single Matrix card.

Anyway, you can't wrong with either choice

Anything higher than 1920x1200 the Lightning would outperfom the matrix because of its extra 1.5gb of vram.

You don't listen at all do you? We are not talking about putting a 3GB against a 1.5gb we are talking about the 1.5 versions of both cards. Please just drop your incessant argument based on RAM. All that matters is which is the better overclocker and performer. The ram does not matter nor will it ever matter IMHO.

Hi Chap ,

The MSI Lighting is the best overclocking GTX580 at the moment.

If you hold out OC3D Will be posting the full review video of the Asus Matrix card on July 4th.

It will be interesting to see if it can mash the MSI Lighting.

There is also the Asus DiretCUII version, im not sure how well this overclocks but it is o/clocked out the box and has an evil cooler taking up 3 PCI slots 3!!!!

Hope this helps :0)

You do realise you can use afterburner on any card right. Also unless you want crazy resolution whats the point 3gb memory most games never push current memory ok so your future proofing but is that vital ?

I'd go with the lightning mate, top quality card with best air cooler around. The Matrix would be a nice option, but I suspect because it has a ROG badge it'll be £50 - £75 overpriced.

Hardware Canucks has pretty much proved this is total rubbish testing Evga's 3Gb GTX 580, which performed worse than it's OC'd 1.5Gb counterparts. Plus lets be honest most gamers play on 1920 x 1080 so no need for 3Gb of ddr5

I ordered the MSI 580 Lightning but the shop send me a mail that the card is EOL ! So I thought of getting the Matrix one instead...

Meh, I have the Twin Frozr II GTX580, works perfectly, IMO the twin frozr cooler is the way to go, if you're not doing anything extreme the Twin Frozr II is good, if you are wanting to absolutely punish the card at its limit, then the Lightning (Twin Frozr III) is better for you.
