guy on ebay is asking me for £340 for a brand new (or possibly manufacturer refurbed model). im currently waiting for my bitfenix prodigy to arrive so single card is my only option. psu isnt going to be a problem as thanks to mr tax man i got a nice rebate so if my cheapo 850watt aint up to running any card i throw at it i'll get a new one.
should i get the 590? or am i gonna be better off investing in something else?

yeah i fell in love with it the moment i saw it. not sure what to do with my RV03 now tho as i still love her to.
PSU is defiantly going but i want to know what im gonna put in the rig before i decide on which one i get (i'm a bit of a scrooge see, if i only need 600w i'l get a 650 max)
i was thinking of a 7950 or 670 but the idea of a 590 still sounds nice.

I can see the appeal but i'm one of those people that would rather have a high end card from the latest generation of cards than a super high end one from the last gen if that makes sense.

IMO the price is too high. the 590 will be faster than the 680 but you then have to rely on drivers..

Now the drivers are admittedly very good, but, one of those cores won't be enough to fall back on should you need to.

They're also hot and loud and use a lot of power.

IMO a pair of GTX 660s will be about as fast if not faster, more VRAM and less heat noise and power use.

I agree with this...
GL putting SLI cards in a prodigy though ;)

But yeah, imo, just get a high-end last gen card. Something like a GTX 670 or HD 7970 will max out most current games. Actually, the only game that might get tricky on highest settings in Far Cry 3 :p

It seems to be within the general area of what a 590 goes for on eBay these days. Although I would not pay that much for a 590 personally.

Well, enough is a relative term ;). One 590 core is still not exactly what I'd call slow. Just by far not as fast as you can get these days, especially not for the power it draws.

They're also hot and loud and use a lot of power.

This would be my main argument against a 590, regardless of price (almost). The chips of the 500 generation were just not really power efficient enough to put two of them on a single PCB. The power delivery on the 590 is engineered not exactly with a lot of headroom, and I've read on quite a few places of 590's just giving out, so even though I can't claim to have any hard, reliable scientific data on this, I am personally very wary of a 590's lifespan, unless it's under water.

I would reason the price of two 580's, which are going way higher than i would pay right now. Somewhere between a 7870 and a 7950, about 250$ tops. So for a 590 i would reason 500-550$ pretty reasonable. Then again i'd also like to see 680's brought down to about 400$ considering the performance of AMD alternatives.

They're also hot and loud and use a lot of power.

this is my biggest thought against buying one of these.
thanks for all the advice, i was always thinking against it, had a couple of you suggested getting i woulda taken the dive.

so now im gonna look up what to get for best bang for buck for around the £300 mark. anymore would be wasted (really is a 680 gonna last me much longer than a 670 or 7950 as im a bit of a techy) and any less wouldn't have the power i want.

once i've got a few more parts sorted i'll start a build log.

670 with a decent custom cooler IMO. Same stock speed as a 680 if you pick the right one :)

^^^This, or a 7950. Depending on price, possibly even a 7970 (a 7970 is about the same price as a 670 where I live).

But yeah, 680's carry a hefty premium (again, at least around these parts of the woods) that doesn't really have a corresponding increase in performance imho.
