What motherboard to choose for a 12900KS

Thinking of replacing my current Z390-based system with an 8086K with a 12900KS and a Z690 motherboard.

I like the MSI brand and these two motherboards were the ones in stock. My understanding is they are quite similar but the difference is price is roughly $100.

Any experiences with these boards in here you would care to share?

Will be using my new rig mainly for MSFS. Where I've found how my current CPU is limiting me in some situations. Hence the decision to upgrade. I'm not planning to overclock the 12900KS but instead let it do its thing. Still, I would of course like to make sure the motherboard won't affect my chances having good experience and get the most out of the new CPU.

Many thanks in advance for your input and advice!

Thats a ridiculous amount of money for something that will be discontinued very VERY soon. Hold off and wait for the 13900k

1. you upgrade to 13th gen and get more performance
2. you wait for 13th gen to release and enjoy discounted prices on 12th gen.

Buying now, is probably the worst thing to do.

Yeah this. I don't think the 13 series will be as cheap per product in the stack (because they were far behind when they launched the 12s) but from what I am seeing the 13600 is specced the same as the 12700, and should cost less, with a much higher clock speed.

As for board? by all means go ahead and get one of those now. All 690 boards can run the 13 CPUs.

I wouldn't buy either of those. Not a MSI fan at all.

Perfect all around board. One of the better looking ones too, IMO. Doesn't have a stupid name either.

Why are some way more than others? features dude. That's it. Don't pay for things you don't want or need, it's a total waste.

What I was trying to say though is that while the boards are 12th Gen orientated, yes they will work for 13th gen, but MSI will release new boards anyway. That allows these ones to drop in price.

I am already seeing a drop on sites like prisjakt.no. I am sure Sweden has the same equivalent price check sites.

Looking at the prices of X670 boards on Buildzoid I don't think these will drop in price.

I paid £230 for mine. IMO I got away lightly, considering MSIs cheapest X670 is £280. And from there? it just gets laughable.

I knew that was going to happen with AM5. Sad fact is it makes their 6 core £300 CPU totally pointless. Time you get it running it won't be worth it.

Depends where you are imo. Norway as an example benefits often from prev gen discounts. I see 3090 Ti for the price of a 3080ti at launch. Ok I know it was over valued but to see it drop from 26,000 to just under 14,900 is a big drop.

Ah yes, very true !

Having watched the video about AM5 boards it seems the price is mad due to having to use BGA PCIE5 chips.

IDK what Intel have planned for Z790 tbh. But if it uses some of those it too will be ludicrous.

And I wouldn't mind, but you are paying all of that for storage. So you can run faster storage, which right now makes no difference at all.

All of a sudden it feels like 2000 again. Where every company repurposed server/workstation stuff into PCs. Only these days everything costs 10x as much ffs.

I just looked up those boards in Norway. Interesting how an expensive country like this and those two linked above are £60 cheaper. And I can guarantee will drop again.

Id go so far as to tell the OP to buy it in Norway and ship it to Sweden. Either that or use komplett.se as its cheaper there too.

As a fellow Swede, I'd look into basically all of the known retailers for the best price, I usually go for the following, that has home transport and potential for difference financial payments as well, if that's your thing. I usually get an invoice, due to I don't like putting my credit card numbers online for different reasons, but that's just me:

You've already linked Inet
Webhallen
Proshop.se
Komplett
Netonnet
Potentially Elgiganten, but that's due to they have a local shop near to me, not sure about your location though.

or just use https://www.prisjakt.nu/ and let that check them all for you.

True, although I’ve done searches recently and noticed that it doesn’t pick up exactly everything to 100%, hence why I manually go in and look. For example a current sale price might not have registered on prisjakt, same goes for that it might say on prisjakt that a certain retailer has a sale on a certain product, but the sale has ended as well.

My usual routine is to visit the links in the prisjakt discovery. Then I havent missed any websites that have the item. It is how I got my 2080ti at a 5000kr discount :)
