After getting...tbh...crap temperatures i wanna lap the bottom of my dtek fuzion as there were a few scratches.

Is it worth doing

Which kit will i need? (WCUK preferably)

How do i do it?

Could it just have been my AS5 giving bad temps (it gave me bad temps on my air cooler too) or should i lap and put mx-2 on anyway

cheers

Wouldn't bother lapping unless the base is fubar'd - a few light scratches shouldn't matter much. If they are bad, isn't it a new block? If so RMA.

I had some dud AS5 once, when I swapped to coollabs temps dropped 10deg!

I'd try new thermal compound and a re-mount before lapping. Didn't someone already do a lapping guide for a proccy? It is the exact same process

I have heard of fake AS5 floating around ebay

The lengths ppl go to scam a few quid :/

 thats where i got my AS5...

damnnnnn

this is it

get.php

2nd hand

It looks mostly hairline which some decent thermal compound should be able to bridge without any problems. If you want really decent performance tho, grab some of what Smithy said - the Coollabs stuff. It'll knock a good 5c or more off your temps.

Not great looking tbh, but not severe... When you say 'crap' temps, what are they? vcore/ghz?

I got my dud (or fake it would seem) as5 from ebay. 2nd lot was from one of our retailers here and I have had no issues with it.

Get some real thermal goo and see what happens, much easier than lapping.

As for lapping you just get fine wet and dry, say 800 grit, 1000, 1200, 2000 etc and work one direction until nice and smooth. You need to keep checking it on glass to ensure the base is flat...

I forgot about that, check my Mr. Smith cleans up thread, you can see my dtek is inverted, the outlet is below the inlet - you can get air stuck which will cause higher temps, I'm positive I don't but if you made this easy mistake too you might have air trapped in the block...

I'd say it is pretty conclusive you got scammed with your AS5. Deffo go for MX2 though from aua or wcuk etc, performs much better than as5 but i think coollabs is still the daddy

Yea i have got it inverted but that because i had quite a tight fit on the tubing going from rad to block. Ill try to get it in the other way round.

btw im replacing my oclabs top (was a faulty batch one) with an alphacool top for my laing ultra.

anything else to check?

my AS5 was from scan.co.uk and tbh its rubbish, im getting better temps using thermlatake poo.

I think ill get some mx2, coz its non conductive as well?

Oh and btw you can get lapping kits from kustompcs.co.uk if you were to lap

So we are almost conclusive mx-2 is overall good stuff to use. If i then rotate my block around and still get crap temps...time to lap?

Just gotta send my bust oclabs top back and get my alphacool one :yumyum:

I'm one of the ppl that swears by coollabs. You wont touch the temps it provides with any other paste.

However, if u just want something really easy to apply then MX-2 is the way to go.

oh, so thats why you would need TIM cleaner. TBH if you have lapped cpu and block not much paste is neeeded, some people dont even use it.
