What do you guys think of the new XFX 5970 4GB Black Edition LIMITED (in CrossFire)

They are saying 2x 5970 simply won't work, won't offer any gains other than you can boast to people you have two.

Oh and don't try 2 ares either as they don't work in quad. Yet, driver issues if I remember the thread.

Whilst I haven't even owned a SLI or Xfire setup I'm struggling to understand the obsession of going quad?

If you are simply going for vantage scores or number runs then I'm out as I just can't compute the real world benefits it gives to you playing a game. I refer to games as you post your results on here. I seriously doubt owning 2 x 5970 will make a difference mate after reading the evidence presented by those who have tried in various formats.

I didn't mean buy two Ares I meant buy one

So, are you saying Asus Ares is better than 2x 5970 2GB ?? that's impossible.

Yes, I am saying that a single Asus Ares is better than 2x 5970 2gb. K?

You aren't going to listen are you? Quadfire SUCKS. So far I have gotten it to work with, count 'em, TWO games.

It has ruined all the others.

So what I am reccomending is upgrading your 5970 to an Ares, which is better and faster. Two 5970s are not better and they're not faster. Just trust Diablo and I on this, unless you want to be one of the silly people who thinks he can do something different to everyone else and actually get Quadfire to work.

Hint - you won't mate. You'll just feel like a complete idiot. It.just.does.not.work. So you're far better off with an Ares or say, a pair of 480GTX under water.

Right lets not let this go mental, Ares is about epeen because its limited. An overclocked 5970 will beat Ares because thats basically all ares is, a 5970 on steroids with some serious plastic sugery.

IMHO single cards are where its at. Hence why even with all the kits Ive played with, I have single 5870's in my own rig

Then really it's all a bit pointless unless you go for 480GTX SLI under water. Otherwise for all that money you are going to notice microscopic differences.

And I thought I was the only one who was never happy with what he has.. I'm just glad I don't buy into the latest technology and keep at least a somewhat sensible cap on it all.

I really thought the Ares would be a lot faster considering it was two real 5870s on one card.

Just look at the Sapphire 5970 Toxic results fella, sfa in it

Fair enough

So yeah, looks like SLI 480 under water then really is the only way to really get it going faster than it does now.

Which is all madness because there's nothing you can throw at a 5970 (ANY 5970) that it can't handle. So it would be a massive expenditure for the figures.

Hell, throw a 5970 under water and it will hit above toxic levels, and be cheaper. That I reckon is your best bet.

There nowt special about the toxic other than the 4gb mem, ANY 5970 under water will overclock the same as the toxic. It all comes down to the cpu/gpu core lottery.

MSI just launched the new GTX 480 Lightning

Guru3D.com

MSI just launched a new GeForce GTX 480, this is the Lightning edition that has been pimped up and equipped for extreme overclocking, especially with sub-zero cooling like LN2.

The GF100 based card has a total of 16 phases PWM opposed to the regular 8th. The cooler is called the Twinfrzr III model and is aluminum and comes with 2x 90mm fans. The card is clocked at 750 MHz GPU, 1500Mhz on CUDA cores and 1000MHz on the memory (4GHz GDDR5).

Since the card is targeted against the overclockers, there are also a number of switches for allowing extreme temperatures increase voltage limitations and an OCP unlocker switch and a PWM Clock Tuner. The comes with a dual BIOS should you mess up one during a tweaking project. With MSI Afterburner you can adjust the voltages for GPU, memory and the PLL, the MSRP for the Lightning N480GTX is 550USD.

SO HOW ABOUT 3 PAIRS OF THIS???

maybe i'll buy 2 for now, and 1 or 2 later .

lol 2 6pin and a 8 pin thats extreme,i woudl wait for the reviews fella before you jump the gun but it looks like it will cool well.

3 is pointless unless you are heavy benchmarking

i thought it was 2x 8pin and a 6pin

looks like a beast of a card, but think i'll wait to see the new 6-series

I am not sure why you would jump the gun and get any more than single 5970. Anything more than a single 5970 scales quite abysmally.

I'm not so sure as to why you want to spend so much money on dated technology. The new 6xxx cards will be coming out soon, and so will Sandy Bridge.

Im getting bored of this bloke thinking he has to have millions of a card to make his rig look good. FFS wake up and smell the daiseys man, children may think that more is better but any self respecting enthusiast worth their salt knows that you are just throwing cash down the drain for your spec list.

If you are expecting us to join your fan club because you are going to waste a bucket load of cash you are very much mistaken.

Y'all gon make me lose ma mind, up in here in here, y'all gon make me act the fool, up in here up in here..

/Lee Evans...

I love football... I love it when a player commits a foul in front of 30,000 fans and is blatantly in the wrong..

He then turns around, faces the 30,000 and says -

F**K OFF. YOU'RE ALL WRONG !

laugh.gif

Haha if that doesn't sum up tri SLI and quadfire I don't know what does
biggrin.gif

And yeah, you warned me off of quadfire and I appreciate that.. But, as I said it was a mere cheap experiment and I was under no illusions

I totally agree with you, but at the same time I am a hardware junkie. Other than folding, I don't use my computer much. There's nothing better than the smell of new PCB. /inhales deeply. If I had more money then sense I'd definitely be sporting an SR-2, dual Xeons, and quad sli 480's. I get wood thinking about it..../inhales PCB deeply again.

But yeah, for the amount of money you'd have to throw away to get that hardware, the performance is definitely not worth the price of admission.
