WD Red drives ?

Dicehunter

Resident Newb
So after seeing the guv give out a small fortune for WD drives which my first reaction was "DAAYYYUUMMMM, He 1 crazy ass mot*********" His wallet must be crying.
I think it's time to make myself a file server :D

I have all the parts I just need drives, Would WD Reds be a good option ?

My file server won't be on as much as the guvs, No where close but I do want the reliability :)

If anyone has any suggestions they are very welcome.

i am swapping all my drives to wd reds.
right now my main os drive is a wd red with a ssd as cache. (will be changing to a larger ssd when i can for os drive)

i changed to (or started to change to) wd reds because my system is on 24/7 and from what i can see reds dont park up when idle so less likely to have the head get confused. they are slower drives. but theres no way i would use a wd green as i had nothing but issues with those.
the reds have a much higher MTBF too.
for an os drive i do think it has to have a ssd cache "rts" or you may feel like its a downgrade.
Alternatave would be to set it up as raid in pairs of two..

as for a server then you would usually set em up in raid any way..

Personally i like the wd reds.
i know thats not really the same usage you want to have. but i think they are a good drive

I only got Red's because of raid mate

^^^^greens I have 8 in the current server in raid 6 and never had an issue

Question : What's the difference between RED and PURPLE WD lines ?
PURPLE : LINK
RED : LINK

And answer like : One is for NAS and other for Survailance isn't good enough.

You can always change the apm value (head parking, platter and head seek speed) via software

Purple are designed to always be always active. a surveillance system is constantly writing (and reading) large amounts of data. They've also got some stuff that lowers frame drops from the video feed.

The answer "one for nas and the other for surveillance" explains it tbh . Although the purple is more geared towards smaller systems of something like 30-25 cameras.

the same thing that made me go red is the difference imo.
35% better MTBF on reds

P.s

whats the difference between red and red pro is a different question that may be a bit harder to answer

Decided to go for 2 x Western Digital Caviar Green 6TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache.

12TB of lovely space :D

good luck with them i hope you get better ones than i have had lol.
i have had 3 wd green drives. all 3 died in less than a year. "4 if you count that 1tb external one that also died" (they werent all in the same system or bought at the same time. 1 died befor the other was bought. and in different houses too as we moved house about 2 years ago )

So I will never buy a wd green ever ever again even if they were 8tb drives for £10..
i really dont like losing my data even if it is backed up.
and there is nothing that I hate more than sitting down and hearing a tell tale "click click" sighing and telling the wife "there goes another drive" and she says "but its still working" and i say
"nah its not it just looks like it go try and open something on it"
and of course its dead.

funny thing is i already know which drive is dead even though im no where near the computer.
never get a smart error. never get any warnings. just clicky clicky of death.

any way like i said good luck with the greens. maybe i just managed to get one from 3 different bad batches from 3 different retailers.. "personally i just think they are junk"

Well as it turns out I had to change my order as they were out of stock and didn't update their status so I ended up having to switch to 2 x 4TB Caviar Blacks :)

I have 3 WD Green 2TB EZRX and no problem with them. The oldest one is 3 years old. I use them as media library. :) I just lost in the past 1 WD Green EARS after 2 years. If I want to use them on nas or home server i would buy RED or Black ones. In normal server i would use RE-s

When buying HDDs online make sure that they are properly packaged and handled. Amazon for example used to or are still (depending on country) shiping single HDDs in the same thin packaging they ship books. Or just in the antistatic bag in a bigger package.

I reckon a lot of defective drives are caused by improper handling while transporting. The manufacturers release guidelines how the drives have to be packaged. Amazon.com even advertises that they follow those guidelines. From what I read amazon.de and amazon.co.uk not so much.

Bought my last 3TB Black from the shop I trust around the corner and it was superbly packaged. I know because he asked me if I wanted to keep the packaging. Which I did.

I'd say avoid retailers that use Yodel for shipping as well. Remember my Kindle Fire dissapearing, and my Alienware case being thrown? Yeah Yodel suck.

i mostly buy from dabs or ebuyer dabs packaged a ssd i recently bought as though it was an ide drive lol. they way over did it. i got a sata wd from ebuyer and that was well ober packaged too (could have been other way round though ssd from ebuyer hdd form dabs.. makes little difference both packaged well)
And on the rare occasion if im in greasyworld and they have a bargain going i buy from there.
