W8.1 Keys ?

You will get a seperate key for Windows 10 emailed to yourself on the Microsoft Account you use to login with.

The process for the upgrade will be filling in an email for initially, which then will go off to Microsoft servers, which then generate you a shiny key to use (All of this is still uncertain at this point, as us testers haven't been fully informed of the process and testing the system as there will only be a handful of us selected for this purpose, so those who don't need to know, won't till everyone else does, but this is the current talk on how it will be done)

(No I'm not breaking any NDA with this info as it isn't any concrete method as of yet that is being implemented, it just the best option)

Each Windows Key will be then listed in a database, so as then you can't try to claim multiple keys against you original key.

If I can find out more info (Without breaking NDA), I will report back on this.

So just bought a Windows 8.1 Pro key, For the peeps who have more inside info, Will the pro version be eligible for the free W10 upgrade or is it just the standard version ?

Only Enterprise users will have to buy WP 10 should they wish to upgrade. So you are getting wp 10 for free

Do you by chance know if I can enter my product key anywhere like on my microsoft account to keep it safe ?

Like redeeming keys on steam or just a simple text file that contains the key?

You can't do the first, the second is done if you create a file on your pc then upload it on onedrive.live.com

Yeah I meant like Steam, I've only ever just typed in the key but it would be good if you could attach a product key to a Microsoft account and just sign in with that.

I think that happens once you freshly install windows. Windows requests you to sing-in with a microsoft account, then the key gets bound to that account. At least from what I've read. I'm still on windows 7...

Yes dude, I got my 8.1 Pro 'N' key and it's all updated passed all checks and eligible for the W10 upgrade when available. ;) How long did it take to get your key? Mine took a week nearly, had to use the generic microsoft installations key in the beginning just to get started.

Got it literally 2 minutes later, Wiped SSD, Installed and activated :)

My last install was a mates key so I thought it time to get my own, Do I have to sign up anywhere for the W10 upgrade ?

No it's automatic, the moment it's available it will show up as an option in the update center, and you will have the choice whether to install (accept) or decline install (accept for later), so long as you have a valid fully updated Win 8.1. So were just playing the waiting game.

Would be cool if we could update to the latest test build through MS Update and then from there to the full thing :)

Problem with that is people on the web, being people on the web would be up in arms if there are bugs simply because they are to stupid, bone idle or incapable of reading that it was a beta b4 they installed it

Not even a beta. Technical preview, somethign between alpha and beta. microsoft couldn't have emphasized this more, it's not ready there are bugs in there

I've been using the technical preview for around three weeks now and haven't had any issues or noticed any bugs. It isn't as smooth or as polished as 8.1 and lacks features, but it is good enough to use as your main OS as it is though.

But yeah, it would be nice to be able to upgrade straight from the technical preview to the final version. Looks like i'm going to have to install Windows 8.1 and then upgrade to 10 when it is out, unless I can grab a windows 10 ISO.

from what ive read on technet and via microsofts press release as long as you have a retail version of win 7/8.1 then its a free upgrade to win10 via ms update. and there planning on a september release for it.

ive treid the latest win 10 build on my win 8.1 lappy and its just as good if not better than win 7/8.1 i did come accross a few bugs which i reported.

>touchscreen not setting correctly
>touchmouse not working at all. i had to plug in an external mouse
>startup programs not saving
>bios settings for uefi had to be disabled to allow bootup

i contacted MSI and microsoft to see if there were any driver updates for the touchscreen and mouse and there is a beta if you have an msi 7 series or above laptop.. they are working with them so all should be golden by the time it rolls out or in the next build hopefully..

and btw as soon as its available ill be updating my windows 7 main rig to win 10 as i think its great!

I freakin' love 8.1 Pro it's awesome with Start8 installed, it behaves pretty much the same as 10 Tech Preview does.

I Don't have start8 or any mods I run it as is, sorted metro to my liking and got use to it in 2 days. My only complaint with 8/8.1 it installs with to much crap on metro to start off with, you spend 10 minutes uninstalling stuff

Well on windows 10 now learning curve ahead ful

Personally don't think w10 will much of a learning curve. More of learning how to use new features then anything. I think if you use W8/8.1 it'll be even easier.
