University not allowing games

Hey guys; basically i've started university and since i've had the internet i can't connect to applications such as MIRC, xfire and i can't play online games such as COD2/4 etc etc. I've been gaming at home for 6 years non-stop and this is a nightmare!!!!

Does anyone know what i could do to bypass this? It's so frustrating

Cheers, hate

I would suggest a proxy. Find out from the IT department if they do have a block on certain things (don't mention games explicitly). I'm hoping mine doesn;t have any moronic blocks, but I woun't find out till october 7th. try connecting to a differnt IP adress if possible, or if worst comes to worst, buy a decent mobile broadband package (with a nice juicy download limit), point it out of the window and hope for decent download speeds.

There are ways around alot of blocks in universities/schools - just a word of caution, some are less impressed than others. Some will kick u off campus, where as others will warn u... then kick u off campus.

Inherently u will produce a spike on the load, and u can be found.

See if you can set the port to 22 which is the ssh port, they probably let that through for educational purposes :D

QUB halls? Commiserations, as I remember, they're pretty rough.

I've a few friends from back home, who were in halls 2 years ago, I helped them set up some ssh tunneling. I'll see if they can still remember how we worked it.

Not tried at Oxford, but they have some pretty strict rules on peer2peer. they also filter content apparently (haven't looked very hard). On the other hand, we do get 100Mb connection speed and I can download itunes in 5.5seconds which is pretty good, despite the 2GB/day or so limit.
