UK Government Invests in a Faster Future

It's 1/2000th of what they put into spying on their civilians! (I'm referring to the recent article about logging activities)

So buy the time im 80 i might be able to watch a youtube video without it stalling in my current residence?

^Maybe if you start streaming it now.

Fibre optic cables??? Cutting edge stuff. :D Well at least they're doing something.

well they could just pull £1 billion out of their arse's and build a new fibre network. O wait thats right, they screwed the UK up and stole money!

They could put a heck of alot more by shaving a fraction of a %age of tax that the companies pay.

The announcement is more of a 'look what we're doing' than anything else.

The majority of the bandwidth there going to save is going to be by allow the isps to curb the rest of us. That I feel is already in place.

In regards to MPs claiming expenses, I don't blame any of them. The rules were there as they exist, and they made claims accordingly. Those who either made the rules or passed the claims are the ones who need to re-adjust their rules or not be so flexible.

Too little too late. Fibre-optic networks have their limitations too. I doubt the infrastructure will ever be able to meet demand.

Besides, the optical networks that are being enabled now are only partially optical. The rest is still copper wire.

fibre optics have been around for ages really

Im still on adsl, yet i know others who are still having to use DIAL UP???

Its about time they made sure at least the whole country can get 8mbps

wont happen tho.

£1m YAY

?

Just what I was thinking tbh. Putting that 'little' amount of money into a project that needs so much more is just wasting money imo. It's not going to result in any improvements, so its just going to disappear.

If you're going to do something - do it properly or not at all.

The government has set the target of getting everyone (including those in remote rural areas) on 2mbps

It's not and investment, it's a COST!

The govt aint gonna get a return thus its a cost, just like all the other "investments" they make- the NHS, education (anyone with sense is jetting outta here after their free education :P - i.e ME).

Way to look at it too is ... £1m... a chunk goes to the mp's m8's company, a chunk goes to a contractor, a chunk goes to some legal firm, a chunk goes on admin, a fair % goes on extra fees that companies charge when they know it's a govt related project. A fee in addition is payed to publicize, advertize and be sure there's nothing that can 'come back to bite them'.

Jeez just create a project title, any firm that does work to benefit that title get's a tax benefit of some sorts.
