UK broadband is among the slowest in Europe

the scarey thing is though although i get less than 1mb, my friend who lives about 100meters away gets 70mbdl due to that road having fibre optic.

honestly not suprised,

im using talk talk(#14 uk) and it doesnt go further than 5.5 down and 0.7 up adn i pay for fucking 12m, thats just bs, the fact is that i live in in a city thats jsut started to crawl out from under a rock, pretty much the entire radius of my town in 50km is covered in dial up and telephone broadband internet, even with fiber broadband that doesnt change much because it still has to pass through all of that copper before it gets to isp(around 60 km)

the max dl ive seen people around here is ON FIBER is 15m which is honestly just bullshit

and look at that im slower thatn 725!!! of uk

im certainly moving away from this town when i get a chance to and next ill choose a decent isp, which looking at stats that probably virgin

Yer optical to the box is still big in this country. To be fair virgin still use it for there optical broadband. But they dont use phone line coper cables like BT use they use high grade coaxial cable from the box to the route. Which isn't bad because the cable can still carry over massive amounts of data. This link explains the speed of coaxial cable if anyone is interested. http://www.pmfst.hr/...m/dodatak-b.pdf

Mine isnt too bad considering its a smallish town in Shropshire (one of the worst areas)

Hoping Virgin come here soon, had them at Uni and it was great.

This is what I get.

Recently BT ripped alot of the roads up around my area and installed new cabling so now I have the option of bumping up to 10mb broadband for an extra £5 a month instead of the 8mb I'm paying for and not even receiving. Why not install fibre optic cables instead of having the overhead of digging all the roads up again? Maybe it makes too much sense but then again I'm not a business man.

All BT seem to be doing is upgrading the more densely populated areas in order to increase the figure for the average speed. The reason why the likes of Japan and South Korea have such a high average is because of how densely populated their countries are compared to their size. Like South Korea has around 500 people per km[sup]2 [/sup]vs the UK's 200 people per km[sup]2[/sup]. I wish BT would invest their own money instead of waiting on government pledges. (I believe that's what I read, correct me if I am wrong)

Not bad for a 30Mb connection, but it does bump around a lot. Goes into single figures, even fails speedtest.net sometimes, but then 20 minutes later will give 30+Mb results! Quite often sits at 10Mb at peak times.

Looking forward to what the 60Mb bump brings, hopefully brings all speeds up, not just the off-peak.

Not to bad but it has hit higher speed's in the past.

Nice speeds. Yer my speed a month ago went all the way to 120, they must have been testing it for the change in a few months. I think i got a DL speed of about 14.8 mb/s. Thats 1gb in 1min about.

Tell me something I don't know

The UK has stuck to telephone lines with a capability of 25Mbps or so MAX, and that's the only real way to get connected anywhere outside the main cities.

The day internet in the UK is both fast and reliable will be after the day die. Virgin offer fast connections, but for an ass load of money. On top of that it takes them forever to get around to fixing any problems that arise, which looking at their support forums happens every time there's a minute in an hour.

I could rant on about other ISP's here and how I don't like them either, but I feel it's best I don't write everyone an essay about the current state of ISP's of Britain.

That's why I'm on Virgin. Was on 30meg down and 3 meg up and it's been doubled and the virgin speeds are what's stated. Infact when I was on 30 it was actually hitting 38

What kind of speeds do you guys get whilst actually downloading something, Seedtest says I get around 5meg but when I am actaully downloading the max it will download at is about 800-900kbs
