TTL Talks: Internet Trolls

Right. I think you there is more about that "trolling" than just people wanting more content but rather more integrity in my opinion. Having the site flood with gold awards is just stupid and that is mainly reasoned the the fact that you give everything from Corsair or Asus a gold award. no matter how bad it is. It began with the 250D and the most recent one is the Corsair headset which just sounded bad but still you said that we were "astounded". I get that you want to please the few sponsors you do actually have but you should be honest and not just be a marketing figurine. Also the metal awarding system has to go. If a product gets silver it just sounds bad. Doesn't mean it has to be I know but it just sounds like cr*p and again by having given so many products which are arguably worse gold it sounds really unreasonable. Ditch the metal awards and make the performance/innovation etc. awards the thing for manufacturers to go for. Something I'd maybe also just create a table with pros and cons about a product. cold hard facts are always the best and readers can create an opinion about a product easier than having to read a conclusion that vaguely describes why it now got that award and not the better one. A table also gives people who really cba to either watch a 30 min repetitive video or read a 10+ page review a faster way to get product information, these people of course have to keep in mind they miss out on details.

Bryan reviewed the VOIDs before and he gave them gold. The Surround was actually cheaper and supported 7.1 and stereo with consoles and phones. The Surround for £60 deserved gold - end of.

The only thing I'd change is maybe have a TTL Talks video once per month or every 2nd month, Sort of like a "Let's sit down and talk chaps" channel news etc... :)

Scrapping the rewards isn't the answer really, as i've said before.

End of the day though, Tom's reviews are HIS opinion being filmed, we may not always agree but we should always respect it, everyone has their own taste for things but we shouldn't forget that the products that come on the market in general are just pretty damn good these days, especially from the main enthusiast and gamer market, things are just pretty epic and its hard not to commend the companies for it, or you would have to be such a hard ass to try and find all the downside to a product all the time, and then you end up with situations where people don't send you products because you keep slamming all the niggly bits about a otherwise fair product.

Not a bad idea on the pros/cons dot points I guess it all comes down to time and resources. No reason (aside from aforesaid resourcing) that you can't do Awards + a rating or pros/cons. E.G. 8.5/10 + Gold Award or 6/10 due to price but Innovation award.

Pros - Colour, Flexibility, looks, Performance
Cons - Noise, Price etc

There are plenty of sites that already do rate products out of ten or five or how many stars etc with pros and cons I know Hardware Cannucks do pretty much exactly that.

I think most of us are subscribed to two or three channels at least and I try to watch a few reviews of any product I'm interested in before I can make an informed choice. The key there is 'informed' and tbh you can't beat Tom for that.

Hey Tom and crew,

I enjoy your content, especially the longer format video's, which I am understanding isnt the way to be on youtube, specifically for the type of content you are creating, for equipment choices, people want the answer spoon fed to them, whats best, X, Y or Z, heres three graphs, and X wins buy that. You don't give them that, you give people an in depth look into the hardware, sure you may fluff about now and then repeating things previously said, but unless your going to script your video's, that is not going to change, (and I hope not also) its a personal choice of how to portray your channel and that is obviously how you are, so keep it up.

I understand you want to try and please everyone, but am I'm sure you are only too aware, it doesn't work, so just make what feels right for you, anyone who moans about it, can go watch something else.

I personally watch your video's for the passion you have for doing it, and for the painstakingly intricate process you go through for it. Seriously if watching paint dry was a hobby and you were reviewing gloss for window frames that didn't bubble, blister or dry slow/fast, I would still watch it,

You' have earned your place on YouTube, treat it as such, its your home, don't pebble dash the towers, when what you want is bright white paint!

Some things to look at for the future,
Subscriber video's - monthly updates would fit, engagement via the channel would be nice to see, i know you have done sporadic ones, but they are really cool video's fun to watch and take part in.

Would also like to see a themed video series, whatever the topic/situation. like you said in your last video about a rig build, based on price or a specific theme. sounds like a great idea, so long as its maintained and updates on a regular-ish schedule

Lastly before I get shouted at for tying whilst err indoors sleeps, on my clicky keyboard, a Modding/watercooling/overclocking of the month video or something along those lines, even just about an aspect of modding/etc/etc.. viewer participation encouraged/driven perhaps.

We watch your video's for you, your take, your thoughts. keep it up, keep smiling, keep on youtubing.. :)

have a nice day

P.S. I basically stopped watching Linus a year or so ago, but his moving Vlogs getting into the new warehouse, was some of the best content he's done in ages, how about setting up a cam for us on your epic journey of the TTL Towers makeover :)

So many painting metaphors, anyone would think I'm redecorating or something..

Tom,

Ignore Linus. I watch very few of his video's these days but most of yours.

Ignore the trolls and wind-up merchants as you will never please them.

Love the long video's, add a few Club3d / Bequiet video's would be great.

Looking forward to the graphic cards and Zen reviews later in the year.

Video's are free but can we have an option to buying you guys a coffee/beer/box of roses or a overclockers link giving you a small kick back.

Hope you treating the Orange bike to a few days out.

It feels like a hard subject, with all their pro's and cons but i do understand Vicey and his point of view.

TTL, every single regular knows how hard you try, how hard you listen to us folks and how much you want to and do improve you own content,site,...

I believe it has something to do with every argument said already. Do companies get scared because " you do more Asus and Corsair stuff"?
Some companies might but not all of them imo.

I dont care about the awards, i just read about products i'm interrested in and form my own opinion based on facts you and others provided.

I believe it might be hard to get samples from companies you dont have any close contact with and i dont think thats a bad thing. You cant do more than asking and if they dont respond or say no, well that might be in their own disadvantage ^^

Just keep doing what you like and love and keep doing it the way you are now. You get subs because people like, and there are biased *** everywhere who dont care about others honest opinions.

Imo i wouldnt change to much about your own style of working, reviewing and being the person you are now. OC3D got created this way, with you and the community you have now together.

More staff might be awesome ofc, might make you bigger but not necessarly better. We all love OC3D the way it is and i honestly believe the every one will keep supporting you till the end! :D

made this longer than expected lol xd

I( think this thread has been pretty healthy.

Lots of positive support which is great but there has been plenty of people picking fault too.

Maybe I have had a load of negativity right at the time Im working my ringer off trying to bring better content and its just made me wonder wtf the point is.

Lets face it, this is all here because I actually care. If I only did it for money then I would never have bought the site or would ever bother spending more like I am now just to try and make things better.

What we really need is for Asus and Corsair to stop releasing stuff, or make some real bad stuff so I can do what I do now and people actually see it :p

Hello Tom,

I must admit i haven't been on here for a long time but that is purely because all my builds are done and i am happy with what i got a.t.m.

When i saw your "trolls" vid i felt like i had to say something more than i did on youtube in the comments so here it is.

First of you need to know i am subscribed to both OC3D and linus tech tips for the following reason:

Linus for short quick random tech things, OC3D to see every nook and cranny of a new case i might want to do something with in the future, and need to hear all the pro's and cons by a person who would look at it the same way i would.

I haven't found anybody else on youtube who goes into detail as much as you do about weirdly placed or missing grommets.

That is what i like about your vids so that's why i am still subscribed!

And no, i don't think you had big money on your mind when you started out making low res webcam vids on a badly lit attic, all the way at the start of this channel years ago.
You did it for your love and interest in pc stuff!

I just needed to get this out to you because i can see it is troubling you more than people think deep down and that needs to stop.

We need the old "DING! DING" Tom back and trolls need to off if they can't appreciate you doing your thing.

Keep it up!

Just realised it's been 5 years this month since I joined this forum. Seen many changes and fantastic progression. As I don't read youtube or fudbook comments as a matter of rule, I didn't know you had a bad case of the trolls.

A lot of what Vicey says is interesting and shouldn't be dismissed. He's actually done you a favour and done the maths. You run a business, not a charity or helpline for nerds and geeks so you need to adapt, evolve and make some tough business decisions. It's evident that you have a great relationship with Corsair and Asus but perhaps you have reached saturation point, I dunno.

I will say this - if I were a manufacturer (say Acer) sending you something to review the last thing I'd want to see at the start of the video was the name of my largest competitor being flashed up in whizzy graphics to the beat of music, and then the last thing you see at the end of the video too :). It's the complete antithesis of what I'd want!

I'll stop there as I' sure you've had enough of people telling you how to run your business. Good luck and chin up mate.

Linus to me = spoilt little rich kid with an ego the size of Merica and thinks he is something "special" (sorry American forum users)

on the other hand TTL is just an average english guy who speaks truthfully and honestly about the products he has been given to review even if it upsets the manufacturer. I can understand him more than I can LTT and this forum is one of the best out there. It has been helpful to me and also funny at times although we may need to cull the trolls :D

Bro.. he's not even American -_-

Nothing to do with where he's from, Talking about ego and on the world stage american ego is quite large.

It kinda does. He's nothing like an American, he's like a Justin Beiber(also Canadian), super annoying and high pitch voice. Calling him an American is insulting:(

However, on ego side of things we could say that about many countries. US just gets the worst of it because we have military all over the world more so than other countries. Has nothing to do with ego but people associate that with ego. It's like asking who has the best military in a YT comment section.. you will definitely see lot's of ego and boasting about how great 'xxxx' is from everyone's home country which turns into a patriotic war online... before I get off topic there, I just don't see why we need to make fun of Americans(not offended personally to be clear). Having personally experienced many people from all over the world who come here as foreign exchange students(like Germany, Aus, FR, JPN,China) they all loved it here and i know of a few of them who came back again. Personally I think it's old views people have that trickles down from the older generation of people globally that instills these views of Americans with big ego's and having the "America is the best" mentality. Actually coming here isn't anything like what most people think. but meh i'll drop it.

On topic.. let people say what they want about your reviews of consisting of mainly Asus/Corsair. Ask them to buy products and ship it to you and you will gladly review it I'm sure. If companies are scared about your honest opinion and won't send you a product, then tell people that you tried and they didn't want to send you one. If you bought everything and tried to review it you would be broke, it's just not possible and people need to understand that.

Some people will never understand

A lot of people who aren't a member on the forums who are just a subscriber on Youtube will not understand about TTL not getting a product some people expect TTL to get a product no matter what and then when he can't get it then that is when they'll start crying and complain, Some people are going to pi** & moan about anything today it's just this generation of today.

I agree and it's unfortunate.
