Triple Channel Memory

Hi, i'm a bit of a noob when it comes to memory so i was wondering, when a company says triple channel, does that simply mean 3 modules or are the sticks configured in a special way, basically, im planning on getting an i5 and i was wondering if i could put 12GB triple channel memory in my rig and then, if possible, to upgrade to 16GB by adding another 4GB module.

Please help! :D

Thanks

Kev

Tripple channel is for the older x58 chipset. They will however run tri-channel on x79 mobo`s.
P67,z68 and z77 chipset will only run them as dual channel.

Right, so should i go for 8GB then get a second 8GB kit when i want to get 16GB?

best get the 16GB to start with this BS of adding memory later can byte ya in the arse. Mainly if you get the exact same stick both times ya buy then your ok. But most manu's change them up a tad between batches or whenever. Basically the IC's may be different from one batch to the next. By purchasing a 4x4Gb set your guaranteed by the manu's that they are all the same matched sticks. Now if this was an AMD setup if you purchased the AMD series of memory they guarantee macthed IC's thru out the product range lifespan.

so in a nutshell if you think you'll need (or want) 16gb of memory do yourself a favor avoid headaches and buy a quad kit

quad is on X79 boards or 2011 sockets. Whatever chipset you go with thats the way it will run dual channel runs dual only triple channel will run triple only and quad will run quad only. But you can have 2 of each running on each platform as long as you have slots for it.In a nutshell having 4 slots on a dual channel mobo does not make it quad.

okay, so just to clear up, if i wanted 16GB of RAM i would need to get two 8GB Kits of Dual Channel Ram?

my rec would be get a good quad kit as they are matched to run together. But yes 2 dual channel kits will work as well. Just because its called a quad kit doesnt mean you can use it for 2xdual channel or 1xtripple channel or 4x single channel. The wording for channel kit just means each stick is selected to work with the others within the kit.
