Tox's first Lapping session.

Morning!

Last night I saw the temps on my poor Intel Celeron clocked to 3.0Ghz.

They where around 60oC LOAD and used to be 57oC, I know it isn't much of an increase.. But I needed something to do. :p

So naturaly I got the chip out and grabbed some sand paper.

Unforunatly I only had Grit: 100, 220, 400, 1000. So I will have to finish lapping another time.

But so far so good if you ask me! :)

I wasn't happy with it, I wanted more copper showing.. so back to the 100 Grit:

So that is my attempt so far. I am very impressed because I have cut 10oC from my LOAD temp. Plus it isn't even finished.

Need to go buy some higher grit papers.

Comments are welcome! But I believe it did the chip a world of good!

I am looking forward to getting a nice mirror finish on this baby.

It is pretty good fun, I must admit.

I recommend it. But be careful, the main reason I did it on my Celeron is because you can buy them for 20quid now.

And it was my first go at doing it so I was testing myself I guess! :)

Tox, just leave it. Now most people recommend 1000 grit max because the mirror finish sometimes is worse for temps.

Edit: if not worse, no major benefit if any at all.

First hi everybody

Get the corners a bit more my friend you dont need to take any more of and just make sure its even just shine her up now with the super thin stuff I would also do the same on the cooler if its not mirrior like (AND FLAT). Get some artic chemical cleaner and some silver 5 and all will be super cool but good start tho. :cool:

Few more years and you'll be able to have your first lapdance session.

Good work there mate, if you dont mind putting some extra elbow work in, pop to the garage and look for some metal polish or T-cut (make sure if its polish that it doesnt leave any finish / lacquer) and some cloth. Lay the cloth on a tile or something, pour some T-cut on and lap the shi* out of it. I've taken a block from green crusty oxidation to _perfect_ mirror with that method without any paper higher than 800 grit

Guys...the mirror finish doesn't benefit anything....but whatever you do Tox dont polish it! Poliahing it is worse and all it does is add another layer between your processor and your heatsink. Mirror finish just looks nice.

using a fine abrasive like i said will remove thousands of hairline scratches which trap air, which is a dreadful conductor. like i said, using a metal finishing product (like i think vader means means) that leaves a lacquer behind would be no good but there is a world of improvement between what you have there and a T-cut IHS and you dont have 1000gpi+ paper so rock on tbh
 
I use to use waterbased ink on glass place the block on lift off and ell wala if it dosent cover all of it. It aint flat rins strait away chemical clean sort the spots and go again till flate. works for me :wavey:
 
This is a celeron matey! :)

It has the pins. Not a single one bent.

What I did is put a tea towl under the chip to cushion the pins. ;)
