Those little annoying F@H things ..

Well, I think I fried my PSU last night; Was woken up @3AM by my wife who said she smelled a smoke smell; I walked into my office and it smelled like burned electronics...

This morning I was able to get it to do a split-second light up of the LEDs on the case fans - and then nothing.

Definitely seems like the smell is coming from the PSU - Corsair TX850...

Hopefully that is it - going to try to throw in a better rated and higher rated one tonight.

Today, my PPD will be suffering mightily.

Damn, that sucks.

Have you got any older hardware to try it out on to make sure?

Unfortunately no... But I guess this is an opportunity to either fix my current build - or start a new one; I decided to go with:

Seasonic USA - Platinum Series 1000 Watt ATX Modular Power Supply

Found a good deal at $250 for that one...

If that's not the problem, at the very least it's a big improvement over the Corsair...

Thought I should follow up; I'm back running again; I ended up putting in the new power supply - and that was NOT it! (so now I have a fancy new power supply - and a spare for my next rig);

Turns out it was the bottom Gigabyte GTX 570; when I disconnected it from power the computer booted up. When I took the card out I heard a rattle - which turned out to be a loose chip with an "R30" printed on it.

RMA in process ;-) I guess thats the best reason for going SLI though - at least I'm still able to use my rig.

ouch expensive, if it had been out of warranty lol.
glad to know you've gotten to the bottom of the issue though and a fix is in the pipeline

does anyone know why my v7 client is working better and getting better WU's since i set the smp to 6 instead of 8?
and also does anyone elses HFM client crash constantly, (only since it updated i might add has this been happening)

new most annoying thing:

  • checking your stats to see you're 7k off 1million and would have been over if hfm didn't crash (again) corrupting the last smp & gpu WU's! :cussing:
on the good side though, it should be reached today 30 hours ahead of the calculated time

Why would I get a 7647 WU on my 3570K? Should I delete it or just let it go?

Is there something wrong with that WU ?
If not (I can't find anything wrong with it) then just Fold it....

I think a lot of us, myself included, get too wrapped up with the PPD that we get. It's not about scores, or competitions etc., it's about crunching through the work load that Stanford needs to help progress medical science. Just stick with it; they all need to be crunched.

I was just wondering because usually my CPU WU's usually only take a couple hours to complete, and this one takes more than a day. I'm not complaining about the PPD, it's actually higher than it normally is. I'll keep crunching it!
