F@H on a GTX1080 FE

Hi guys,

I'm back for a bit, as I decided to us F@H to stresstest and heat-test my graphic card.

It's an EVGA GTX1080 FE with EK-WaterBlock and EK-Backplate installed, so the temperature ought not to be the problem. I saw so far max 41°C in games. I don't expect it to be much higher in F@H.

However I have the graphic card nicely overclocked as well to 2088 MHz on the core and 1400 MHz on the memory. Hopefully that will create some nice PPD.

Because I haven't joined F@H in a long long time I would like this thread to help me a bit and report on the experience with the GTX1080, which I assume I might be one of the first to let it fold.

I managed to get the F@H Client running (yesterday it didn't work). And it seems to work now. The first WU is without the "client-type advanced" setting, so I don't expect its result to be entirely legit. Also my CPU started folding a WU as well, which I will finish and then turn the CPU F@H off.

Currently I'm folding a P11430 WU on the GTX1080 and it's projected that it should create an amazing 818k PPD. I remember my server with 48 cores years ago could do only half that.

I'm monitoring the GPU's frequency with MSI Afterburner. It says 2088 MHz, which is like it's supposed to be. However I see the load on only 89%... I might still be missing something to get it to 99%.

Interesting, keep us updated. I'll have to get my folding rig sorted out. I need to go from cpu to gpu, but just can't justify the cost...
 
I wanted to do some further testing while I was sleeping, but the Core seems to have been unstable. Maybe, just maybe it was the memory overclock. I downclocked both, because the F@H client stopped folding after a few failed attempts of folding a WU.

This is brilliant. In the end F@H will also help me find the most suitable clocks for my graphic card.

I doubt that I'll be able to pull of an entire day of folding because I still want to use the computer, but at least it might give an idea what the GTX1080 is capable of.
 
Unfortunately further testing indicates that the overclock which is rock-stable for gaming, seems to be too high for F@H.

I had several crashes of WUs being folded and decided to let the GPU run stock for a while. I will definitely keep folding for a while until I find clocks which are more stable. That will be also great for gaming in the future.

Stock my GPU clocks itself to 1900 MHz and achieves roughly 700k PPD according to the F@H client.

I will OC again, and see if 2050 MHz is stable enough to be used
 
Congratz on your new system!:) And thanks for for sharing results with us.

From what I've read you can expect 750K to 1000K+ PPD with a semi aggressive OC on the 1080 with results being WU dependent. (Results I read were on air and FE card).

Start with a mild OC and increase as successful results allow to achieve max stable F@H OC. I'm sure that this OC will be gaming stable. Memory OC has little or no F@H performance benefit, but helps gaming....

I've read that the Folding team ask people not to use it as a benchmark/stability test for OC'ing as it can skew results.
 
Well I knew 2088 MHz on the core was perfectly stable for gaming so I figured it would be ok for F@H too. As it turns out, F@H crashed with certain WUs (can't recall the number).

But stability in that regard is only obvious after quite a few WUs and not after just a few hours. 2088 MHz worked well for many hours but crashed in the end. So I downclocked it a bit, and now it seems the OC is way more stable.

I'm now at 2050 MHz on the core and the memory is on 1325 MHz. This was running the last 8h or so without any sign of problems.

The F@H client projects over 850k PPD. How realistic that would be, would be indicated if I let the PC fold for a few days. This I doubt will be possible any time soon. But if I leave for a weekend or so, I might give it a shot.

I find it quite amazing what kind of performance you can get out of one card though. The power consumption is also quite mild considering...
 
Ive been trying to use the new 'benchmark' in reviews but its massively inconsistent and two of the WU's only put the GPU under about 30% stress

If you guys can tell me if they ever get it sorted Ill add it to our normal testing suite

I doubt this will happen any time soon.

on another note: I will test today with a little higher overclock of 2075 MHz. It's been folding a few WUs like that, but I'll let it run over night to make sure it's perfectly stable...
 
A weekend long folding@home test is completed. I let my GPU fold 24/7 for about 3 days straight. I started on Friday when I left and I came back a short while ago to let the last WU finish.

It ought to give an idea what the GTX 1080 FE can approximately do. I have to clarify that I had the GPU overclocked to 2088 MHz because I found a way to keep the voltage somewhat stable at 1093 mV...

1st day: 672,483
2nd day: 812,886
3rd day: 907,854
4th day: 532,075

I folded from about 7 am-ish on Friday to about 6 pm-ish on Monday... So the 2nd and 3rd day numbers are with the GPU running the entire time
