Those little annoying F@H things ..

all the noise in my rig is coming from the 2 xigmatek fans on my silver arrow and my 570 phantom when the fans spin up

rest is silent

dont have any hard drives to make any noise

Oh dear god dont get me started on GPU noise.

I have an Asus 560ti Direct CU II Top. The advice I found was go for the Asus or the MSI Frozor (or how ever you spell it). The Asus was the cheapest.

Now I was going from a silent 8800GT (Standard MSI cooler on it) so I was expeting a bit of noise. I'm games I'm sure it would have been ok. But F@H was just too much for it. Furmark could make the card top out at 99c and folding advanced methods wasn't that far behind.

I could not believe the noise comming from it. It certainly didnt take me long to chuck the cooler in the bin and slap an acrtic twin turbo 2 on there.

What really stuck me though is how my 460 GTX ran alot cooler and quieter with a stock heatsink/fan than the 560ti with the Asus Direct Cu II on it. Nope it wasnt the thermal paste, checked that.

Still I'm happy now

Grrrrrrrr

Now for some reason my net connection just simply wont work when my bus speed is at 102.3. Thankfully 102.2 is ok for now, but that will probably stop working through the night just to mess with me.

My PC just randomly turned off. wtf. Deffo time for a decent heatsink. I can't turn the heat past 17C while folding...which is 24/7. Looking at the H70's 57 dB, It'll be a CM 212 Evo.

What are the temps at the moment? Are you running high volts on the cpu?

Something isn't quite right if you need an ambient room temp of 17c to keep your PC stable.

3.7Ghz now. I'm pushing the thermal limit with the stock cooler. I think there's something wrong with the cooler (probably dust), but I don't want to stop folding. TBH, it didn't perform that well to begin with...and it was stupid loud.

Hey guys,

I have a question. I just started using -advmethods for GPU folding and my temps have gone up from an average of 71 C to 80 C. Should I be worried about the temperature or is it O.K to continue folding. I guess it has something to do with my room being pretty small.

Thanks

With the -advmethods on GPU F@H and asuming a later nvidia card/s you are probably running 762x WU that is worth 5187 pts and uses the card much harder i.e. uses more shaders. Your temps are on the high side IMO, I generally try for 70C as a max.....

On the plus side of this, if you are also running smp on this rig you will see an increase in smp performance while running the 762x WUs at a similar PPD or better than previously.....

But yes the increased heat is probably due to the -advmethods on gpu.

First of all, Merry Christmas.

Yup, it is indeed running the 7622 WU. The overall PPD is 1000 more with -advmethods and it doesn't affect the CPU PPD as much, which is a bonus. Do you think I should continue folding on the GPU at 80 C or is it too risky in terms of the card dying. I've heard they can go up to a 100 C without a problem, but obviously the lifespan would be greatly reduced.

Merry Christmas to you too.

Personally I worry when it hits 90c, although I prefure below 85c.

As it stands my 560 Ti is at 81c (this is with an Arctic Twin Turbo 2) and my 460 is at 79c.

I have just got back from being out for a while and so the rom temp has gone up, as soon as i let some fresh air in they will both settle around the 75c mark.

The card makers don't think 80c is too hot otherwise the fan would be cracked at 100% and as it stands my 560 Ti is only at 63%.

IMO, at 80c you have nothing to worry about.

OK, thanks. My fans are at 100% though.

On the heatsink that came with the 560 Ti, even at 100% it found it hard to keep the card below 90c while folding the -advmethods, and Furmark would take it all the way to 99.

Which I can confirm, atleast on my card, it started throttling itself and never went over 99c. Maybe the internal shader clock went down, I don't know. What I do know is GPU-Z showed the core speed the same but the performance on furmark went down.

Everyone has their own thoughts and feelings on what limits to push. I'm comfortable with 80c, if your not then best find a way of bringing the temps down.

Also remember these days the temp is taken directly inside the core where as in the past, when 60c was seen as getting too hot, the 60c would have been the surface temp.

If you're after a new cooler, the arctic ones are pretty damn good. You would probably want to get the 3 fan version but the dual fan would probably do too.

With my rooms door open the temps go down to 78 C and with the side panel off they go down to 73 C. Do you think I need better fans for the case?

But as my card is non ref, will the after market 580 coolers fit?

At stock, my CPU hits 60C while folding. I think it's about 20C in my house. Is that normal? I like to OC to 3.7GHz and my temps go to 68C. Core Temp says 70 is the limit for an AMD Phenom II chip.

Sounds like a winner there.....

I forgot to add with my 70C max, that all my 460/560TI cards are over volted and OC'ed to max F@H stability at those temps.

If the your card is stable at 80C, things should be OK.

Anyone notice how slow these A4 units are? The ones above 300 are VERY slow, I am getting 16,000 with the small units but im only getting 8000 PPD with ones above 300. Anyone else have this problem?

If you are going to buy new look at the 560TI with 448 shaders, should be a easy 15K card....

Nice that's what I need i can still feed 3 PCI-e slots

,

thanks Steve....

PPD from me Will have to take a day or 2 as i also forgot how to overclock on a i7 860

i am now folding at default, SMP BIGadv... i hope to get the WU's in on time...

I'll try again later after training (O/C)...
