Whilst browsing the net, using the ever world dominating Google the other day i noticed more so than usual the sponsored links you return when keying your desired search into their engine.
I thought i'd investigate some more and found a few interesting articles. Some go on for hours and basically try to sell you advice so i've watered them down and took out the juicy bits for you to peruse.
Obviously the main focus going on here is rankings.
Rank no.1 = more revenue.
Heres a piece from a ranking artice. A guy makes a bingo card generator to download and has adwords on his site.

His site currently makes $40 for every 1,000 pageviews.
His estimated income from ranking #1 for [bingo cards]: $2,000 a month.

Type in computer lo and behold theres Dell as a sponsored link.
On reading into things futher and believe me this is only skimming the surface its amazing how we are being manipulated by the major players.
All the top dogs Google, MSN search and yahoo use similar if not identical tactics to get us directed to their sponsored sites.
This is the mythical " Golden Triangle "
Independant companies are contracted to track eye movements of subjects browsing the net and the results are hardly suprising.
Heres a shot of some of the results.
As you can see Googles eye track is much more intensly focused on the top left... where as you can guess the sponsored link is usually situated.
The others are more open so theres more chance you will use a alternative link.
I found it quite interesting as and i say im only scratching at the surface.
Feel free to discuss and comment.
Thanks for reading.
