Sound proofing

Hey guys I'm thinking of buying water cooling soon and was wandering if a 200mm fan on the side would make much difference if I had 1 there as I also wanna make my PC quieter with some sound dampening so would losing a 200mm fan on the side make that much of a difference?

In the future I will be WCing the GFX card as well so the fan won't be used for that.

Also as for fans to go on the RAD I'm thinking of getting a think RAD like the XSPC RX 360 and I understand that these require lower RPM fans so would these Gentle Typhoons Work OK or would I have to get louder 1s?

I want to make my PC as quiet as poss without losing major performance.

I would make everything in your rig super quiet, and then see sound proofing as the cherry on top. Here's an old article from spcr on dampening materials, its a few years old but the principles still apply.

Well I wanna get the quietest fans possible hence I'm asking about those gentle typhoons as they only give out 5dBA, But then theres the problem of HDDs, ODDs and the PSU fan thats why I was looking at the sound dampening materials

There's always going to be a compromise between cooling and noise. If you run your fans at their quietest, you are generally pushing less air. Most silenceing nuts though will happily run their hardware a few degrees higher to reduce the noise levels.

What case are you going to use?

I'll be using my current phantom, but since I have the computer about 2 feet away from me I can hear EVERY little noise it makes and it's just starting to annoy me a bit. So I'd be happy to run the Typhoons at the lowest if it means maximum silence =]

I'm in the same boat as you, have a Phantom and its on the desk next to me. The noise from the graphics card is doin' my head in. I don't think the phantom is built with silence in mind, there's too much mesh on the side panel. All that sound has a direct route to your ear, and for all the mesh the temps aren't that great either.

Yup mine exactly the same lol.. But before I was going to get a 200mm fan for the side to help the GFX card but if I'm getting WCing is a 200mm fan worth it?.. Thinking up just blocking the 200mm hole with sound proofing.

Probably cost you the same as a pack of Acoustipack, and probably get better results.

Thats a good idea but then you'd still get all the noise from everything else whereas with the Acoustipack it'll dampen everything =]

It also makes your case hotter as well.

Thats why I was thinking of a 200mm fan on the side. Then it would blow cold air to the GFX and CPU

Don't think you'll get a fan on the side panel if you keep the D14?

I stand corrected. Won't fit mine though as my ram sinks are too high and make the 120mm fan too high... Have you tried mounting a 120mm fan on the floor where the 2nd drive cage is? Might feed some more air to the gpu?
