Sound Card for fps game

And for a while I'm thinking of buying a sound card to get the top performance in the arena fps (Serious Sam HD, Unreal tournament ecc...).
The point is what?
The maximum budget is 200 euro.

There is no real reason to get a sound card unless your a music producer or have ultra high end headphones or speakers but here is what i recommend:
CREATIVE Sound Blaster Recon3D Fatal1ty Champion Sound Card £200 (dont know conversion rate) The asus xonar is a better option though its half the price and about the same quality.

That's a bad choice....

You can spend a quarter of that and have a similar kind of sound quality with a Xonar DX

I do not have headphones, you who do you recommend? 5.1 or 7.1? or headphones with a decoder 5.1/7.1? Along with the headphones i need some sound system?

I'm a little confused.

Latest mainboards have already high quality sound cards onboard .. if yours is not good enough I would recommend a xonar or x-fi.

I personally don't like surround sound.

You're better off getting a good set of headphones and a soundcard if you're wanting it for gaming.

I use the Xonar Essence STX - but I don't know if you'd be willing to spend that much money on a soundcard. If not, you'll want something like the Xonar DX and a headphone amp, then some decent headphones

Don't buy the recon3d!!! They're trash cards.

For gaming, Go for X-Fi (if you can find one) or Asus Xonar.

Avoid those recon3D cards like the plague, they're rebadged and rebranded crap cards, very little processing power from what I've read up on. ( I was looking for similar having had an Auzentech X-Fi Prelude for years and needing to switch to PCI-Express) I don't have the links but I was put off them very quickly after seeing them put against an X-Fi / Asus Xonar. Bit of a dirty tactic on Creative's part if you ask me. Just look at the PCBs, they are practically bare!! compare that to an Auzentech, X-Fi or Xonar card.. you should immediately see the issue.

Headphones are great for stereo and simulated surround for games but if you really do what that positional edge, nothing really touches proper surround speakers. 5.1 is enough, but if you play games that actually support 7.1... it can help a bit.

If your budget is £200 all in however, I'd pickup an X-Fi card and a decent pair of stereo cans and use CMSS3D to simulate surround sound.

Oh hey Rast, didn't see you were still around :P

Boards may have onboard, but a discreet option is always better in my opinion and experience. All sound cards are certainly not created equal :P

If you are not playing with a decent headset/headphones then I would recommend getting a good set before touching a sound card. From my own experience A decent headset will be the big jump compared to speakers as it is easier to pin point people because of the way the sound is delivered by the headset. You can tell if a player is in front of you or behind you very easily.

Sound cards from my own experience help boost the sound and make it clearer. They can also be adjusted so you can turn down the bass in game of loud gun shots or explosions making it easier to hear people.

I am playing on a sennheiser pc350 and have been for a long time now and they are very good. I have no idea what is a good brand or model these days as I have had no need to keep tabs on it. I am also running a creative fatality xfi sound card which is good.

As I said though the first thing I would do is get a headset/headphones as that is what I found to give the best initial boost to my game.

You've linked me 3 headsets, and somehow that's proof?
I'm so confused.......

Headsets are specifically designed for either use for VOIP or gaming. Therefore in any music scenario they suck. To me, there's not really much point whatsoever in spending that kind of money if you're using it for gaming or VOIP.

In your case of the Beyerdynamics that you linked, and someone claim that's proof of how I'm wrong(?)
They're the casing of the DT770s, with worse drivers, and a mic attached, and yet they cost almost 3 times as much as the better DT770s.

If you're spending that kind of money on a headset - something is seriously wrong in your life.

All headsets do, whether designed for VOIP or Gaming, is artificially adjust the voice channels and/or the bass - which to gamers who care enough to be buying something that expensive, should know that it just makes sounds unrealistic.

In music - ANY headphones win by a mile.
In gaming - ANY headphones and a decent soundcard win
In VOIP - Granted a headset is probably better - but who cares?

All these headset have the same quality like headphones -> good sound - that's all.

We were not discussing about the price I just wanted to show the other users, that there are headsets, who provide good sound.

Quality?

They're built well if that's what you mean....

But they don't produce realistic sound like headphones do.
