Server Components Advice

What do you want to do with the server gaming wise? Are you planning on installing games to a network location?

Have you thought about getting a good NAS? Qnap has some excellent devices.

A server for each? how much music do you have FGS? Seriously dude they will create so much heat and noise youll wish you never wasted your money.

My 12tb one is bad enough!

LMAO!!! Right now I have 2 tb worth of music alone not including discs I want to add.. I have a crazy amount of movies and tv shows which is the main reason why I want a server.. and the gaming I really don't need I was really gonna just make it a file server but I guess I don't need that.. But I really need to store my media on a server or somewhere.. because all these disc and cases are taking up to much space and is a P.I.T.A to find what I'm looking for.. As for sound, i can put it in its on room and probably connect it through wifi or run ethernet throughout the house..

Wow, that's a lot of media! You don't need RAID10 for a simple home media server like this. It will be a complete waste. Go RAID5. This way you will only lose the capacity of one disk as well. WIFI isn't a good idea, you will definitely want to go gigabit ethernet, especially if you start streaming movies to a uPnP device like a PS3 or Xbox 360.

I want an uncle like yours

A server case seems like the only way to go with the amount of space your talking about, even larger cases like some Lian Li's wouldn't be practical.

I was actually thinking of going raid6 but you think raid5 would be a better choice

RAID6 is pretty much identical to RAID5. AFAIK the performance is the same. With RAID6, however, you lose the capacity of two drives in the array with the benefit of being able to lose two drives at one time vs only being able to lose one drive in a RAID5 array.

Raid 5 = up to 5 drives

Raid six 5 drives +

thats per array. You may need to have multiple smaller ones.

You need raid 6 for larger drive arrays to cover data loss if a drive dies.

I think a Fractal Design R3 (or XL, but R3 should be fine), it has 8 HDD/SSD bays, plus two 5.25" bays, one for optical, one with an 3.5" adapter, can serve the needs of many.

8 x 2TB (much more cost effective then the 3TB ones) is ~15TB of useful space. You can add another one (maybe an SSD) in the 5.25" with the adapter for the OS and you'll be golden.

Beyond 16TB of media files I begin speculating on the legality of the stored files for "simple" home users.

LE: But if you're looking for something extreme, here's a NORCO RPC-4020, 3.5" 20 BAY case review @OCC: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/norco_rpc_4020/

20 * 2TB = ~37TB of formatted capacity.

They also carry one with 24 BAYS: http://www.norcotek.com/item_detail.php?categoryid=1&modelno=RPC-4224

24 * 2TB = ~45TB of formatted capacity.

SATA 6Gbps, hot swappable and everything.

All you're using the server for is streaming media, correct? If so you can get away with just about anything. A dual core CPU would be plenty. Just get as good as your budget will allow. Pick a board that will give you the options you need. I'd probably go with something that has onboard video like an 880G chipset. I usually go with Gigabyte or Asus for the brand. Go with AM3, you have a wealth of options for a cheap dual core all the way to an expensive six-core.

thanks alot and congratz...

If you just want to have somewhere to store all of your media why don't you just add extra drives to your existing PC?.. Then use any extra money to upgrade any parts you wish.. You could just buy like 5 2TB Hard drives with 5400RPM to keep them quieter.. That's how I store all my Movies, Music, Games etc.
