im upgrading my system to a 6700k on a MSI z170A gaming m7 board and i want to know what ram frequency to choose. Intel say it is compatible with 2133MHz memory however would i just work if i threw a 3000MHz kit in it? or would the cpu have to be overclocked (which is going to happen pretty mush as soon as i get it) or something to get it to work? Apologies, this question has probably been asked a millions times. im not that clued up on ram i must admit

Thanks

Intel always certifies their CPUs for lower memory speeds so that they know that every CPU will definitely be able to run it. It is basically to cover their ass and prevent anyone from RMAing their CPUs.

Pretty much ever Skylake CPU I have seen has been able to easily run at up to 3200MHz with a good motherboard.

Performance gains from higher clocked memory are limited, so I would advise that you look at cappacity and aesthetics primarily. Anything at 2800MHz or over runs great.

So would you recomend buying higher clocked memory off the bat or buying lower clocked memory and overclocking it. Keeping in mind faster memory is more expencive

Binning is so good now that its rare to find kits that go MUCH higher than they have on the box.

Buy the speeds you want then the rest is a bonus is how I always advise.

Sounds good to me. Cheers guys. Would love some dominator platinum just because its gorgeous. But my dark rock 3 cooler is huge so probably wont fit xD
