Raid 1

Hey guys

My dad is running his business off of a 5-6 year old machine and he is getting fed up with it just stopping dead now because it is so slow. He's asked me to look for a new pc for him so I've got an idea in my head.

i3 2100

4gb 1600 RAM

etc etc

But then I came onto the hard drive. I'm not sure how much space he needs, he said 1tb would be good but not sure if this is overkill for him, but I wondered what would happen if his hard drive was to fail. kaput, all the business files gone. So I thought about RAID 1 as I know it is a form of backup. Don't know anything else about it and I wasn't sure whether you gain any extra space out of having RAID or you just have the space of the one drive because the other is used as a mirror. So if he was to get two 500gb, would his total space be 500gb because the other drive is simply used as a mirror? I might be getting a bit complicated with this as I'm not sure if he's got an external drive he backs up onto or not. Anyway, no harming in learning about something else haha

So my question is, does RAID 1 give you the storage space of just the one drive, rather than the two combined? I assume so because the other is used as a mirror. Any help appreciated

Yep, raid 1 is a mirror, so you will effectively only see one drive in the OS. It is recommended that the drives are of the same type and speed. Even if you do use raid 1 its still a good idea to have an off site backup for business critical data.

yup agreed, 1 is pretty much backing everything up twice not as effective as 0 but its good for office stuff incase one of the drives dies etc.

Plus to my knowledge, RAID 1 gives faster reads as it can pull data from both drives at once. And read speed can play a big part in a computer's perceived "speed" and responsiveness...
