Project - Tuxedo

The C5 memory error lockup is a simple fix. The memory boot voltage has to be set at something that allows you to start the ram at the speed you specify otherwise the Crosshair will run at 1.2v which is a no no for 3200/14 or 3466/14. Fix is to clear CMOS, set the memory boot voltage to 1.35 or 1.4, save and boot into your OS. Once its performed a full boot cycle it will then allow you to play away without hard locks.

Very nice, How are you finding performance so far or are you still in the early testing stages ?

I think its going to be like the FX8350 a little in that we will be waiting for the software to catch up, especially on the Microsoft side. A well tuned FX was a smooth run for its time and this has the same feeling even if i'm getting to the zone of the sweet spot but not hitting it. It feels snappy but you have a feeling that there is more to be released. On Linux once you get pass the Systemd bug its a monster.

Lightroom Classic on Win10 and you can feel, see the difference applying changes, not light and day but enough to say yeah this is a step up from the 2700X.

Cooling needs attention or at least cooling capable of handling this chip, i'm idling at 32C to 34C but it is popping up to 40C- 45C according to HWInfo. I put it through the AIDA64 stress test for a few hours last night and it stayed at around 75C after 20 mins warming up. Then again, i'm running a D5, 600mm of RAD and a custom loop so it should behave itself.

To sum up, i'm a happy camper. Do I look at the X570 stuff and think I need? No. Do I look at my Vega VII in work and think it should be at home? Yes. Is there more to come? IMO, yes, i'm on the Crosshair VII on Agesa 1.0.0.2, I can boost over 4.6 (which Der Bauer reckons can't be done) and once you figure out the little quirks it is rock solid and the Asus engineers should be able to tune the X470 platform more. The only worry I might have is that the X470 platform might be too good and eat into the X570 sales at which stage it will become the step child and be quietly forgotten about.

Few updates and tweaks on the way to this build.

The non booting issue located to a dodgy lamp that was up in the home office. If it was on, the gpus would initialise 20% of the time. Discovered this when the wife commandeered the office for home working and I got shifted to the kitchen. Must hook the lamp up to a power meter. 1 Vega 64 taken out and sold on. Cool for PC Mark or 3D Mark but not in real life for me.

The VII Hero is being upgraded to a Viii (next week)

Samsung Evo Pluses 500GB have been replaced by 2 x 1TB Addatas

Last but not least, my CH Products HOTAS are being retired for a Baur BRD-N Gimbal, a KANTTORIN KONE throttle assembly and a MFG Crosswire rudder set (just waiting on the stick to arrive)

A few pics

Latest memory test after some tweaking. Now @ 32GB (4 x 8GB 3200 C14s)

Loop has been in for a while now. I'm seriously underwhelmed by the EK Velocity, my Vega is as good as gold and does not go above 50C under any load (hot-spot excepted - it touches 75C) but the R9 3900X with the Crosshair idles at +17C over room temp and nudges 85C underload. So I have an AC cuplex kryos NEXT VARIO with VISION, PVD/Nickel arriving next week. It's €160 bucks so Lula money but :) f it.
It's the vario bit I'm interested in because of Ryzen's offset chiplets. Dunno if it will help but worth a punt. I also need to initialise the flow meter in the D5 Next so will do that during install.

Arrived a day early. Nice heft to the box

Couple of allen keys, Thermal Grizly paste and spatula + spring and mounts

Good packaging without overdoing it

Finish is almost mirror like

Some braiding and heatshrink needed.

Looks pretty cool to be honest, feels like a quality part.

Yeah, AC make s**t hot stuff.

Sad to see the EK go, not. :D

I used the old Kryos (delrin like that one). Was a great block. Still got it as it goes, it just doesn't fit Threadripper lmao.

Yep, the original Velocity doesn't seem to be up to the job for an R9. Since I have a pretty good complement of AC stuff already (Aquaero, Hubby7, Quadro, D5 Next), made sense to add another to the Aquasuite setup. It's not Delrin though, it is as far as I can work out brass coated with nickel and then overlayed with titanium coating using a physical vapor desposition (PVD) process to make it scratch resistant. Picks up finger prints really well :)

Yeah it's kinda like Apple (but in the good way). I have a AE5 (the non screen one) a Poweradjust 3 and a few splittys (oh and a farbwerk for RGB ) and it's awesome to have it all controlled in one thing that actually bloody works (and doesn't turn your fans off and boil your GPU......).

Quality gear. I've never regretted a single penny I have put into their stuff.

I have a solid brass block by them too. And I mean solid. You could kill someone with it quite easily hahaha it's so heavy.

Happy with this. I stupidly updated the bios without backing up my profiles but was seeing a good 15C improvement over the Velocity at a mildly insane 1.4v, ie with the AMD High performance power plan, idling at 32C, hitting 75C with PC Mark 10 but coming back down to sub 40C within a minute. The Velocity was struggling to get sub 40C and routinely hitting 85C plus.
Anyways, I now have to redo all bios settings and tune it back up :), Tis a pity Isumus power plan app not released yet. Probably save me half a day :)

Crosshair VIII Hero put in place of the VII Hero in anticipation of the new Ryzen's announced today. I added a Abit WiFi card with Intel's AX chipset and Bluetooth, cheaper than getting the WIFI version. Crosshair VIII latest bios allows PCIe bifurcation on the top X16 and X8 PCIe lanes with a Asus Hyper M.2 V2 card so I'm going to combine 4 x 1TB sticks (all gen 3) in that and run in the top slot, I'll shift the GPU to the x8 slot (it's PCIe v4) and then pick a couple of Gen 4 NVMe cards for the motherboard ports over the next few months in 2TB format. All going to plan I should hit >10GB/s with the Hyper card and the motherboard ports ;)
