Project: spontaneous silent

A few days ago I got a TopCraft tool like the Dremel, with a lot of accesoires. Today I decided to test it on an old (meaning: OLD, about 10 years) uATX case I had lying around.

After drawing and cutting an 80mm hole at the back I decided to make a 120mm intake in the sidepanel and a 120mm outtake at the top. Only then I thought: why the hell didn't I make photos and make a build log out of it?

So now I made the photos áfter making the holes. I'm planning to make an as silent as possible casing for a system. The only problem is I do not have the money to buy a system to put in and my current system is already dead quiet (unhearable with side panel off).

Anyway, enclosed are some photos of the results of pure dremel testing:

1. The o so ugly front panel that really needs a paintjob (yes the sticker really says 'designed for windows NT/98' and the other one 'Intel inside pentium II')

2. The side/top panel with two 120mm holes in it. The up/front will suck air from the top/mid of the case because of the case's construction.

3. The case construction itself. The blue thing is a 3.5" module that I already tested my paintbrushing skills on.

4. The paintbrushed 3.5" module.

5. The case almost completely assembled, only the front panel is missing because it's a pain in the arse to remove.

I'm thinking about making the case black and some of the components (dvd drive etc.) blue. The top 5.25" bay will be used by a fancontroller to both control the fans and give the 120mm some room to suck air.

Nah my dad's got a compressor and I've got a paintbrush :+ So I just buy 500ml oilbased paint and 1liter of terpentine and I have 1 liter of spraypaint for €9,- :P

It's going to take a while though, since my study will start monday and my job contract starts saturday.

Got the first 5~10 coats of primer done today :) I'm used to just keep spraying and correcting until I'm quite satisfied with it, so that explains the insane amount of layers :P

Upon opening the glasses my paint has been stored in the past few months I found out it has turned into some dry plastic like substance... Turns out the plastic tops of the glasses solved in the fumes, so I had to make new paint. Nothing too bad though, since I still had half a liter or something :P

Images:

1. The case side/top panel in primer. Nothing much special to say ... except that the lighting is wrong and the paint is actually white instead of the pictured grey.

2. The case's construction, looking from the back of the mobo tray. I haven't got a photo taken from the other side because I do not want to damage it doing so. Now that I'm looking at it that has already happened at the bottom of the back of the case, will have to correct that tomorrow.

3. And the front panel. I removed the Acer sign from there with a dremel and a sanding drum, the HDD/power led prisms are covered by some electrical tape.

Tomorrow I'll sand off the dust that was caught in the paint and do another few layers of primer. Also I'll make some blue paint to repaint the 3.5" module ... it's sprayed with primer because I didn't hide it appropriately.

I do not know exactly when the next step is going to be taken. From monday through thursday I'll be busy all day with my education so I do not think I will do much in those days.

I think black with blue accents. So for now I'll make it all black except for the 3.5" module which is already blue.

I'm thinking about trying to make some carbon fibre pattern in the black, I've seen a tutorial video about that a while ago. Might just try that on one of the pieces I cut out the 120mm holes and see what the results are :)

Edit: wee 50th post :+

Edit2: Oh crap... Just found out something very stupid. I forgot to drill the attachment holes for the fans ><
