Yeah I've used a backplate.. Reason being that like you I'd read that it can put stress on the board if too tight. Thing is I tightened the backplate too tight and bowed my board a touch even before putting the Supreme on . Loosened it off and yeah all is fine now. If possible then use a backplate just to be safe I reckon, but if you can't then just be very careful. Plenty of people use them without backplates.

The springs are tough though.. Tightening them down until the block actually made contact with the CPU was hard work.. Had to get a cloth out for grip on the thumb screws. It starts getting tough about 3/4s of the way down.

okay...hmm.. how far did u screw them down? I think the plate on the back of my board will keep it from bowing doing a similar job the the back plate. I think ill just for it tbh.

Just need to decide on a coolant colour now, hmm green or black?

Very nice looking rig btw (Y).

As far as it needed to be honest.. Best way to check is hold it side on every few turns to check if the block is making decent contact with the CPU.. If there is a gap then give it some more until there isn't a gap.. Then just look at the actual board and see if its still nice and straight. If there was too much stress on it the board would bow.

Black does look cool.. Depends on if you want it lit up nice and bright or slightly more sleek black look.

Choose what you'd prefer seeing and not what is considered 'cool' as its you who will have to look at it each day.

Oh yeah and thanks.. First person to actually comment on the finished rig :(

I love that coolant, matches so good with the keyboard backlight :p

Lol well I had 3 choices and I'd already had blue with the 900 stock.. So it was either purple or red..

Thing is though depending on how it feels it can either look pink, orange or purple.. Tis odd.

Ok so well it hasn't really been that long since I finished with the purple but the time has come for a total overhaul.

Shortly before my holiday I got my new ram and a few bits and bobs to to prepare for when I got back and had my major new hardware. Anyway what's going to happen is the purple is going and being replaced with UV black. New ram is going in and is going to be watercooled along with the my shiny new Q6700 all slapped into my new Maximus. Was gonna get a GFX card too but that will wait until the biggest and best hit us in the next couple of months. Ahh yeah there is more power too with a CoolerMaster M700.

Cooling for the motherboard will be changed a touch too with my current NB cooler HR-05 being slapped on the Maximus SB and I've bought the new IFX version of the HR-05 to go on the NB and both will have silent 80mm fans attached. I'll leave the stock Maximus Mosfet cooling in place but attach a Scythe Mini-Kaze to it.

Think that's pretty much the idea for now. Will undertake the work on Friday night / Saturday.

Oooo no I forgot.. Also bought Vista Home Premium 64. That'll replace my current 32 bit version.

Pics of new hardware to follow either very shortly or later this evening.

Stuff

Ok so here's a pic of my new toys.

Will take more when I unsheathe them all and also freeze the big lump'o alu from the Maximus.

some nice bits of kit there mate

Na I really really don't... That's why I did it tonight.. Just to get it out of the way and I can start the fun stuff tomorrow. I dropped one of the fan connectors and couldn't find it anywhere!! Turns out they can bounce on carpet.. It was about 1.5 metres away under my TV stand

Must have missed this thread!

Love the old setup, Bungy... I have a feeling I shall love the new as well. ;)

The Maximus Formula makes me go all tingly inside. :o

Cheers mate.. Hoping for some decent results from the Maximus. Was so close to buying an IP35 Pro before deciding on this.

Ok that was a piece of
cussing.gif

.... Freeze it up for about 30 seconds until its frosty and then just twist gently and you can here it cracking and the whole lot just pops off.

I think it works as any moisture in the compound will freeze and expand thus pushing the heatsink away and breaking the bond.

Pics in a min

Ok here we go..

See in the 2nd pic the grey thermal "stuff" over the NB... Well it kinda seems like a film. It can just be peeled off and under it seems to be something more like thermal paste which ya can see in pic 3.. Bit odd.

Once both NB and SB had popped off, the lump still wouldn't fall off.. Couldn't make out what was holding the silver bit onto the Mosfet heatsinks so I just pulled it until it came off. Sodding great sticky as hell thermal pad... Was making a very good contact though at least.

Now, time to clean all the gunk off.
